hey guys,sunday I installed a new cummins e brake on my ram,easy job love the brake,wouldnt be without it #ad
any way when I got done and was just dingin around I got to thinking and wondering if I got a seal on my air cleaner and hose,I didnt do it but thought a guy could have the almighty cummer a runnin and spray some starting fluid on the connections and see if the motor ramped up? one would think if you had a leak you could find it this way ,I suppose that after the turbo this method would not work because its a possitive pressure,so the only place this would work is in the intake as well as the vacuum system,

this is just my way of thinkin,let me know what you guys think as your opinnion is appreciated #ad

Bad Idea!! I get your logic but------ the 5. 9 is equipped with a heater grid in the intake! You could explode the intake, intercooler,ruin the engine or all three. Keep the starting fluid away from almost all modern diesel engines. The better method would be to phisically check clamps for tightness, wiggle the pipe at the hose. The air systems on the (new diesels) is a very tight and easy to seal system.

Kevin,your idea is a throw back to the old trick of using a propane torch,not lit of course,to find intake leaks on a gasser. Won't work unless there is vacuum,something our Cummins don't have.
 
We do have vacuum. If you have a boost gage that also doubles as a vacuum gage, at idle you will have vacuum. Once you put a load on the engine, the vacuum starts to slowly go away, and as the turbo produces air faster than the engine can consume it you get boost.

Throw your truck in "N" and rev it up... no boost. Brake torque it, and suddenly you get boost. Its now under a load.

If you didn't get vacuum at idle, it wouldn't hurt to pour any flammable of any kind on the intake hoses because there would be no way for the intake system to suck it in. This is also why a leak in the intake system at any point can allow dirt to enter the engine at idle and low rpm.
