Did anybody see the March 2006 issue of Hot Rod Magazine page #104? Cometic Gasket has joined forces with Garlock Helicoflex to produce what they call their new Phuzion technology head gasket. It's basically a MLS head gasket produced by Cometic with the traditional O-Ring being replaced by a Garlock Helicoflex Gas Filled O-Ring that installs seperately without any machining to the block or the head. I don't know if they will be available for the Cummins Diesel at this time. A sidebar in the article regarding availability states that the head gasket and gas filled o-ring are ordered as seperate components. The gas filled o-rings must be ordered by bore size, then Cometic will supply the rings along with a modified MLS head gasket. There is no mention of this yet on Cometic's web-site, but here's their link: www.cometic.com . Here's the link for Garlock Helicoflex: www.helicoflex.com . Looks interesting. Might be time to call Cometic and see if we can get a group buy going once the technology is proven. I wonder if the rings alone would be able to be used with a modified Cummins head gasket?

I contacted Cometic about a month ago to see if they made gaskets for these engines. I was told they are doing some R&D on it now and would be about 6 months before anything was released.

I was looking at them as an alternative to O-rings b/c I know of a few Mustang guys running these gaskets with a descent amount of boost pressure and no one has blown them yet. And you can get them in different thicknesses.

the next sentance in the article states:

"The only requirement is that the head and deck surfaces be flat within 0. 002 inch and have a 50RA-or-finer surface finish"

SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have the Mar 06 Hot Rod to read the story on these 2 parts, but I did talk with someone a few years back that was using something similiar. Mike Moran told me he was using a "Gas filled O-Ring" instead of head gaskets on one of his engines. I think if someone was really interested in using them a call to Mike (Moran Motorsports) would help you out quite a bit. This was around the time he built the 4 turbo BBC for the white Camaro of his.
