Most of us have probably had some person at the fuel station comment on our First Gen trucks. Nice truck...sounds good...etc etc. Usually nice things. People like First Gens.

But the one I ALWAYS seem to get kind of makes me grit my teeth, roll my eyes and say "yes....it is....". I can't stand when people (typically other diesel owners, and often times Dodge Cummins owners) say...."Hey nice truck...that's a 12 Valve isn't it? The 12 valves were the best!"

I just wanna scream "DO SOME RESEARCH....all First Gens are 12 VALVE!!! They didn't come any other way!!!" It's like telling me "hey your truck has one steering wheel".

Of all the things to discuss on the First Gen trucks...people wanna discuss the fact it's a 12 Valve when in fact they are confusing a 2nd generation topic with a 1st generation truck. Oh well...what can I do? Lol

It is What it is! My '93 really gets them! It is so dang UGLY, stinky and all around an old monster that even folks veer away from me on the highway. Hmm, Maybe they think UGLY is catching or the parts might fly off and strike their vehicle! It really gets me when they decide to "push me up the mountain" cause I am doing the speed limit! A typical 4 mile hill on one route I take is about a 15% grade. Lots of twists and turns, but plenty of opportunity to pass me! When they start pushing, I take off and leave 'em in a cloud of smoke. They can't accelerate up that hill fast enough! When I get to the top, there is a pull off and I sit there waiting for them to pass. I wave and smile! Ha Ha!!!

In the short time I've had mine back now with the new paint job, I seem to notice some people are kind of shy about coming up and making comments about it , I see them eyeballing it and itching to ask who knows what and they stay back.... not that I'm actually complaining or nothing !! :D

Normally it is general compliments along the lines of wow, that is so clean for its year. Wow the truck is perfect. Then it normally goes down hill from there....

1 - Thats a Cummings diesel you have. Those are great engines. (No, I have a Cummins..... you know how intelligent that one word just made you look? This will be a short conversation. ;) )

2 - Is it for sale. Now this one is the one I find most frustrating. Starts off mentally going I guess that is a compliment. They like my truck. But would the guy see it the same if I asked if his 30 year old blonde wife was for sale? Bet not. :D

Then 9/10 times, they don't take my "I'm sorry. We have been together for 12 years now. I am not sure I could part with my truck now" as being serious. They normally "make a generous offer" at this point. This is where the conversation heads south real quick. I dont mind someone giving me a realistic offer, but most are stupid. This past summer I had 6 offers for my truck. All in the $10,000 range.

The best was the last offer of the season. Guy is in a nice clean gen 1. I actually pulled into a gas station to see the truck. He looks at the truck for for 1-2 min and said:

Him: Is it for sale?
Me: I'm sorry. We have been together for 12 years now. I am not sure I could part with my truck now
Him: I really want your truck.
Me: Thanks for the compliment but it is not for sale.
Him: Would you trade for a 80 chevy I have at home? I want another gen 1 so need to get rid of it.
Me: No thanks.
Him: What transmission?
Me: 6 speed NV5600
Him: Oh I see. Stock transmission.
Me: Umm....
Him: You know what, I will give you $10,000 for it.
Me: Its not for sale.
Him: Thats a good offer for what you have there.
Me: I have almost that much in my transmission.
Him: Fine. How about $11,000?
Me: I have to go.
Him: I would really like to own your truck. Would be a great mudder or for hauling stuff.
Me: Nice meeting you

He was the worst of last years offers but most are along those lines. They all seem to get so angry when you say it is not for sale! Like cmon people! You wouldnt want to pay what I have in my trucks. LOL

Must go get my blood pressure meds. I am ticked off again...... Thanks Nick! :p

LOL. I could easily understand your frustration. You should get your cost down to the penny, add in your personal value amount, plus some extra just to make it worth your time and effort.....then spring that number on them. It might end the conversation real quick. Tell that guy a 1980 Chevy makes a nice 1980 Chevy....and not much else. LOL

The ones I used to get were usually something like "Hey that sounds like a Freightliner", or "Christ that sounded like a tractor trailer coming into the parking lot".
When people would ask what I had under the hood I would answer "Just a 6 banger".
If they made any other comments I would usually say "Well maybe it's old but I always get to go first at the 4 way stops".

I usually only get disbelieving stares, dirty looks and assorted facial expressions that say" Get that old piece of junk off the road" =) ! Ha Ha!
The worst places are sitting at a traffic light, in town. Waiting for the green light. The unfortunate soul in the right lane has his window down directly in line with my 4" exhaust. With 40 Horse injectors, I'm a might over fueled! GAG! Poor Feller! :-{}:D

When people ask if my stuff is for sale I throw out some random stupid high number like 60 or 70 G's

Exactly!

I like it. Curious to see the facial expression on the guy when I tell him its worth $250,000 based on Nick's "personal value" formula. :D

Thought I had 2 people after mine for 18.5 , but when it came time to see the dinero,..... well you guys know the rest !!!:-laf

Yeh but that $18.50 was in US $ :) When you hear "that sure is in good shape for it's age" I think they mean it as a compliment but you want to say " It didn't get that way on it's own " . When they bock at your high price just tell them " You can't pay to much - you can just buy too soon " or get the sticker from Geno's "NO MY TURCK IS NOT FOR SALE"

I sold my 1st gen in June of 2000 so lots of things have changed in almost 15 years. (I had a '92 W250 Club Cab) Anyway, of all the vehicles I've owned, that truck is missed. Hand on to them guys. They are something special.

I am the first, the original, the only owner of a 91.5 D250 that, other than needing a paint job, is factory stock and in good condition. I turn down so many offers .......(usually in a Home Depot or Lowe's parking lot) from guys wanting to buy it (for nothing, of course) that I am considering putting a Not For Sale sign in the back window glass !!!!

My 90 is so ugly I enjoy driving on the California freeways and they move over for me, must think I dont have insurance, haha, rattle can paint
Yes I pass those high $ suvs on the grades

Most common question I get about my 1st gen is does it roal coal? My response, does the soot around the tailpipe and dually fender answer your question? And I've lost track of how many times some punk comes up and asks, is it chipped? My response, haven't found the ecm yet, if you can show me where it is I'd gladly chip it. Actually had a kid spend close to 10 minutes looking for it one time. Gave me a good laugh. And I always get the best looks from people when I start the engine and a plume of smoke shoots out the exhaust, never gets old.

A little off topic but, pausma, I would love to see a better photo of your truck it looks nice in your profile pic. I will also say with it being a 2wd keep a close eye on your ball joints in the front end, or this could happen to you
