I'm curious to what extent burning in the exhaust manifold is occuring in these engines. I've seen 2-stroke data where peak EGT is 18 inches downstream of the exhaust valve. Certainly 4 strokes wouldn't burn so far down, but it would be interesting to see data from an engine equipped with thermocouples every 1/2 inch or so.



Looking back, we've come so far from my original question about the common rail mechanism. :eek:
 
In a four stroke it would seem that combustion would be essentially complete by the time the exhaust valve opens. Unless unburned fuel is present and excess O2 is present downstream it seems that EGT's should have peaked by the time they enter the exhaust system.
