Driving home on the highway tonight got a chime and lost the tachometer. Then all the gauges. ABS, brake, low fuel, and engine light all came on. It read "no bus" on the odometer. Truck never hesitated or ran differently. Now gauges read and everything is off except the engine light.

I figured it must be a communication issue between modules and that's what the codes seem to indicate: PCU P1694, P1693, P1687, and ECU P1693, P1698.

Any suggestions???

I Had Something Similer. no Gauges, abs, low Fuel, engine, and Air Bag Light On. engine Ran Ok. the Cruise Worked But The Light Was Not On Next To Odometer Which Read "no Bus". went To Work Next Moring And All Was Well. checked Codes And Got P1689 And 1693. only Mods Are E-z

The message "no bus" on the instrument cluster indicates that there is no communication with the instrument cluster and/or the other modules on the vehicle. The Instrument Cluster serves as the "bias" for the bus to operate. I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with your truck except for a possible bad connection at the instrument cluster. There was a TSB for replacing 1 of the cluster connectors to solve this problem on 1999 models but does not apply to yours. This does not mean the problem still doesn't exist though. I have found if you remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle and add a little dielectic grease to the terminals and plug it back in the problem is usually cured ASSuming that there is not 1 of the bus wires cut or shorted. ;) The right hand connector (facing the dash) is the one that contains the bus wires. They should be in pins 9 and 10 and be violet/brown tracer & white/black tracer. The Bus operates at about 2. 5 volts so it dont take much to make it freak out. Hope this helps. :p

how do you think temperature would affect this? mine does it most when it is very cold outside. lately it hasnt lasted long enough for the "no bus" to show up. mark

well check engine light has been coming on at times showing the same codes. p0215,p1687,p1689,1693. temp might have something to do with it and it seems that the "WAIT TO START " lamp goes off quickly even tho its 30ish out-side. than check engine light comes on. i cleaned all body/engine grounds but have not inspected the gauge cluster connecter. i am going to disconnect the e-z and do the connecter.

This is exactly what happened to mine. No BuS and CCd ... I checked the connectors at the PCM and they seemed fine then I pulled the dash, cleaned the contacts and put it back. Problem solved.

I'll find some dielectic grease someplace and give it a shot ...

Thanks!

This didn't last. Two days later and it kicked in again and now no amount of in and out with the cluster helps. I've checked everything noted without any help. Might have to break down and take it to the man.

It resolved itself. I can tell you what I did. I took it out and put it back in half dozen times and I smeared dilectric grease on the connectors in the back of the dash. Maybe with the dash going in a few times it finally pushed enough grease onto the actual contacts that it now works. Sorry I can't be more specific.
