Tow Haul Mode, W/5th Wheel

Which Guages

Who is running this? Im looking to haul a few 5vers this summer for people w/o trucks to/from campgrounds (seasonal). I dont want a traditional 5ver hitch since I use my bed alot. I currently have the turnoverball gooseneck hitch and like it ALOT. the gross max weight seems low though, Ill be pulling 20' and up trailers.

Any tips/ideas?

Thanks

Ian

It is rated to 18,000 lbs. GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and 4500 lbs. VPW (Vertical Pin Weight)

I use the B&W companion 5th wheel hitch. You'll find 18,000 lbs isn't really a low rating for a 5th wheel hitch. Our 5th wheel (see signature) has a GVWR of 16,000 lbs.

I use one all the time in the RV transport industry and it works great. I love the fact that when I quit this job my bed will be flat and empty. About 12k is as heavy as I have had on there and no problems at all. I think it's a great hitch!

We sell them along with the turnover balls, most people wont buy them because the are too expensive :{ so they go to a dealer that will weld one to their frame (because we wont) and have them install it  other than that it works excellent and you dont have those stupid rails to worry about.

if they werent so expensive i would have both in my truck. sometimes it would be nice not to have the rails in the bed. but sometimes they are handy for tying things down.

I have the companion hitch in my rig. I tow a 14k# fifth wheel. No problems with the load. As stated above, it's rated for 18,000 pounds.

I do a lot of cabinet and furniture making in my spare time so it was very important for me to have a clean bed (to lay flat sheet goods in it). No problem there - take the companion out and flip over the ball, and a clean bed. I also like the fact that the companion breaks down into two pieces so I can easily unload it out of the bed myself.

I looked at the Pullrite, and while it is a very nice unit, it was more expensive than the B&W, and it didn't have a gooseneck ball (though one is available). Everyone I know who has a B&W has been happy with it (myself included).

If there's a 20' trailer out there that weighs over 18K pounds, I sure wouldn't want to pull it.....

I have the B&W setup with companion 5vr, love it ,, was an easy install , clean bed when not using, no welding or holes except 4" in middle of bed, price for both pieces was about $ 1000 , about the same as a nice Reese or comp, when you add the gooseneck attachments, had considered a Pullrite ,but glad I got this instead

I have the B&W, Love it. We Off-Road almost every weekend with our 34' Toy Hauler. AWESOME setup. I highly recommend this setup.

Here's valid question. Going from a Pin-Box to a Goose neck Ball. Would you loose the ability to legally carry someone in the 5th wheel while on the road? I never thought of doing it, until I had a cab full of Britney Spears Fan'atics. Oo. :-{} :{ :p :-{} :(

Kids ended up in the trailer for the last 400 miles of our trip. They loved it, and so did I.

ok dumb question here... . I just surfed ebay and found a few hitches (5ver) and the mounts that they hook to are on the truck bed surface, they bolt to the top of the frame correct? Im thinking I can put a 5ver hitch in and still have the "Flip-over" bolted up as wel. Ill have the ugly "bars" accrost my bed floor but I guess I can manage with that... .

Thanks again!!

Ian

If you're going with the bed rail system for the 5th wheel hitch, and want the option for a goose-neck. This design eliminates the need to cut the truck bed, utilizes the same base rails as their standard 5th wheel hitches and is easily removable by simply removing the four locking pins. The 2-5/16" heat treated ball and attractive powdercoat finish are included.

.

Pin Weight Capacity - 6,250 lbs.

25,000 lbs. Gross Trailer Weight
