I was just looking through genos new flier and seen the autometer gauges.

They show two different probes for the pyrometers.

One is a competition series and one was the street series.

I was just wondering what was the difference between the two.

The competition series says that it is for performance use.

I was just wanting some more info on these.

Adam, If you read down below the descripton on the flier, It states the street series is the one you need for the turbo diesel, which I use and most likely the others. for more info go to www.autometer.com.
 
The competition probe works on the diesels too. Big Bob installed that one preturbo on his truck. It is heavier-duty, plus the depth into the manifold can be adjusted and then locked in when you tighten the nut, whereas the other one is a fixed distance. If I had to do it over I'd go for the comp version even though it's quite a few $$ more.

I got the comp series probe, it's lasted me a year and a half now, still going great.

Always buy the biggest and best to start with, hopefully you won't find yourself replacing it!

I also use the comp series I beleive it also responds much quicker. And like others said it is heavier duty then the street and adjustable. .
 
I run the street series and have not had any problems. On the depth issue- I did not tap very deep into the exhaust manifold so it was not an issue with mine. If I had the extra money, I would have gotten the comp. series, but in all reality, the street will be just fine for the majority of folks with mild bombs.

I use the #5244 probe. If you compare the two side by side you can tell which one "looks" a bit more heavy duty. When I was gauge shopping I emailed Autometer and they told me to use the #5244 on my diesel. Did you read the gauge article in the latest TDR?

I totally agree with Briar! Always buy the best you can afford!



The Comp is the first and only pyro I have had. The only thing I can tell you about it is that it goes up and down almost as fast as the tach. Very sensitive!

I looked at the latest TDR and I did not see what part of the gauge article you're talking about. What page is it on?

Thanks guys just looking for a new gauge to replace my vdo's

only have a 30lb boost gauge and i wanted a bigger one, and i wanted my gauges to match.

just got autometer ultralites installed, purchased from genos with the comp probe. Wow, does that baby react quickly. It will move as much and as fast as the tach. Does anyone know if the elecrtonic box needs to be calibrated at all? what is a good shutdown temp if the probe is mounted pre-turbo? I have never seen how fast the street series probe reacts but I can atest to the fact that if you want instant reading and can afford to buy the comp probe it is worth it.
 
I believe the general consensus on the shutdown temp is 300 degrees or less (pre-turbo) before shutdown.



I read the article in the latest TDR (Issue 34, Nov/Dec/Jan 2001-2002) where they discussed EGT gauges. "Exhaust Gas Temperature Gauges: Fact and Fiction" written by Jim Weir, Humble Tinker, RST Engineering on page 20. On page 21, there is a chart that compares the time to final voltage comparisions between different brands of thermocouple probes.



Autometer 5244 (competition) had a time of 37. 3 seconds.

Autometer 5249 (street) had a time of 37. 4 seconds.



The article is very good and explains just how the darn thing works.
