Lately, when I let off the throttle suddenly, I hear a loud, rapid coughing noise that slowly goes away (5-6 seconds). The harder I'm pulling, the louder the noise when it starts. I believe it's the compressor, but may be the turbine itself. I haven't had the presence of mind to watch the boost gage when it happens, so I don't know if the boost is spiking or not.

Anybody know what is causing it?

Thanks, Tom

It sounds like you are barking the turbo. When you are making a lot of boost and you suddenly stop the fueling, the compressed air in the intake backs up against the spinning compressor wheel and causes that sound. It isn't good for a turbo so you should try to let off slowly until the boost is lowered.

I`ll second Allnew2Me... If you have a stick (your sig doesnt say), barking the turbo is easy. An auto is a bit harder to bark the turbo. Too much of that will snap the shaft, very bad.

I personally like Ricola to handle the coughing:-laf

Question for those of you in the know, so when I shift under heavy load should I slowly let off, or simply clutch, let off, shift, and give it heck?

Of course I was told to drive it like I stole it too:D

Mine is pretty much stock, although have been told by others that previous owner must have put a plate intoit judging by the get-up-and-go it had.
