Here I am

Compressor surge

Thanks, TDR Staff

Need ideas of where to look next

Occasional single chime but no DTC, happening more lately

The filter minder does not indicate anything other than EXTREME restriction. If your filter is more than a year old-change it! Same for the fuel filter(s)

It took trying several turbos to eliminate turbo surge on my truck. All larger turbos surged worse. A Garrett Stage 2 was the smallest option but performed the best. I can't remember the last time it surged in several years. It is the most drivable turbo in every way but I have to keep a close eye on EGTs, even when not towing because it is so small. Water injection helps a lot.

An air filter actually become better at removing smaller particles as it is filled with them..,The oem or aftermarket equivalent "double thick" air filter (i.e. part numbers below:)

Napa P/N - FIL9946
Wix P/N - 49946
Dodge P/N - 53034249AA

can in fact hold over a POUND of dust/dirt/debris, which is ALOT. There is actually no reason to change them until just before they start to choke.

Here are the specs--

Dust capacity - 540g
Max air flow rate - 675 cfm
Max pressure drop - 0. 36 psi
Efficiency - 99. 6%
42 pleats 3. 75" tall

All that being said, the same is NOT true for fuel filters which should be changed at proper oem mileage intervals, although IMO one can also use the information from before filter gauge and after psi gauges to determine optimal time to change larger canister type fuel filters.

I got a log but I didn't check it out yet.
Air filter is very clean (ProGard7)

I got to do another run w/the temps @ 40* and light drizzle at 500'.
I almost missed the surging sound, Last time I easily heard it, this time I was busy watching my Touch & suddenly I realized that I was hearing a fast pulsing sound.

Maybe I'm just paranoid! :p

I'll report back in the morn when I Check out the log.
I plum forgot to watch my lift psi gauge but I expect it was 10~psi.

I wish there where a way toread the date stamp the logs stored on my Touch's sd card! {maybe they are and i dont know it] I'm not sure which one it is or MAYBE i never recorded one
None seem quite right.

Well, i have another load next week, try, try again.

Here is a pic of what i'm hauling; 50~% moist hay bales wrapped in poly so it ferments. Yes its heavy! ;)

I hauled a load last eve, 40*f and clear. Truck ran well, ''surge'' was never heard!
2000-2240rpms/ 19000-22800rail/ 800-1000*egt/ 18-31# of boost. 3rd TC locked, In a 5 sec log. [i logged more but this was steady cruise to wot till i let off.] A lil hill i came to.

Still a lil confused but glad i didnt hear any weird sounds. I tryed to check drive psi but had a leak on my drive psi gauge set-up. 20# of boost and 15# of drive is just not right!

My lift pump psi was at 8psi wot.

Thank you for your input guys!

I haven't had a drive pressure gauge in few years, but unless I was above 2500 rpms boost always exceeded drive pressure.

I'll keep a eye on this, if anything comes up i'll report back. I love learning how stuff works! Thanks again guys!

If anyone is interested; the powermaxx turbos specs are; [this is from turbo resource]
stage 2 = comp.= 61.4mm/82mm
turbine 64mm/72mm With a .89AR

stage 3 = comp. 64mm/88mm
same turbine With a .99AR

They where working on new ballbearing turbos but with the affordable S300 turbo out there, the demand just wasnt there.
These had; stage 1= comp. 62mm/82mm & turbine=62mm/71mm
Stage 2= comp. 62mm/84mm & turbine= 65mm/74mm
Both with a .84AR

I dont know how many where sold but i expect they would have been sweet!

Does anyone know if the comp wheels on the powermaxx are cast or machined billett?

Would appreciate an explanation of that. Thanks! Steve
