I am looking at an ACTRON OBD II Code Reader ( as shown in several Auto Shop suppliers? Does anyone out there have any experience with this item?

My Vehicle is 1998 12Valve, Manual Trans, 4x4, SWB, California Emmisions.

Am new at this Do-it-yourself! But as a recent retiree, gotta look out for the $'s as much as I can.

If not the above mentioned item, any suggestions on others of a similar price range? ($150-$200)?/ (J. C. Whitney list one called a EQUUS OBD II) Thanks for whatever input you can provide. .

Jim

Jim, save your money, a scan tool isn't necessary with a 12 valve, another advantage of a 12 over 24 valve. Instead spend your money on a factory service manual if you don't have one. The manual has a list of trouble codes that will flash on your check engine light after the key is turned from off to on three times rapidly. Models with a digital odometer display the codes in that location. Manual explains how to do the run though.

If you have laptop handy you should be able to purchase cd to down load into computer ( you will need the connector also).

But as illflem has stated getting info from warning lights is cheapest way to do it. You just have to more than 10 fingers. :D
