computer guru's !!!! i need help with wireless routers etc.

i recently added a second computer to my home and want to share my DIRECWAY satellite internet connection with both computers. i bought a wireless router and 2 wireless usb adapters so that each computer would receive the internet wirelessly. no problem u say!!! wrong!!!!!!!!

here's my problem:

the signal from the satellite is fed to a desktop modem with coax.

the signal leaves the modem with a USB "b" connection and then to this computer with USB "a".

the wireless router needs to be behind the satellite modem and needs to be fed with an ethernet connection.

how can i turn the USB coming from the satellite modem into a ethernet cable ????

all wireless routers i have seen are fed with ethernet cable. are there routers available that are fed with USB "a" ???

my reason for going wireless is that the new (2nd) computer is on a different floor of my home and would be difficult to hardwire.

What operating system are you using? I believe you will need to find your Sat. connection under network connections and enable internet connection sharing. That is what I had to do back when I have a sat. modem (older pci card vs. usb connection).

i have one of those,,just not sure how it works.



so,,if i enable internet connection sharing on the computer,,and use a USB to ethernet adapter from a usb port on this computer,,and then run the ethernet cable to a wireless router,,i can then send the internet signal to the new computer ??



other than a wireless adapter for the new computer,,what will i need to do to it? enable internet connection sharing too ??



i only want to share internet connection between the 2 computers. no other files or printers etc.

You need to hook up the usb to ethernet adapter between the modem and the wireless router - there will most likely be a port on the router labeled WAN, hook it up there. Then you run ethernet between the wireless router and your PC and wireless cards in the remote ones (or you can use wireless cards in all of em). You also want to enable WEP mode in the wireless router and on your PC's (instructions should be in the wireless router manual) and set a code so that others can't easily break into your network.

yea steve,,that was my original idea on how to make the connetion but with the modem having a USB "B" connection where it leaves the modem and then a USB "A" (flat) on the other end of that cable i had 2 USB "A" plugs that needed connected. i couldn't find a USB A FEMALE TO USB A female connector anywhere.

i have it networked now but still needs some tweaking. i had to install the usb to ethernet adapter on this pc (old one with no ethernet port) and then run ethernet cable to the wireless router and then a wireless adapter on the new pc. works ok,,internet is a little slow on the new pc,,but alot faster than a dial up modem.

i used the windows xp on both pc's do the networking.

i had to make this (old) pc the host for the network and the new one a client because the old pc is where the satellite modem sits.

i was told to make the new pc with the faster processor etc. the host and the old one the client because the signal is feeding thru the old pc which is slow to start with. i'm going to relocate the satellite modem to the room with the new pc and change it to the host pc which will give the client pc (old one) a faster connection.

WOW!! did i say all that

does any of the above make sense to you ?

i did see that mentioned in the routers manual. is that a greater concern for someone living in a developement or the city ??

i'm sitting in the middle of 40 acres with no neighbors in site and 6/10 of a mile from a public road. should enabling WEP be a concern for me ??

this is easy. Just hook the sat modem up to the fastest computer. Then put an ethernet adaptor (NIC Card $10. 00) into that computer. Turn on "internet connection sharing". Plug the wireless router into that ethernet adaptor (may need a cross over cable?) and your ready to fly. Only problem is the computer with the sat modem hooked to it needs to be turned on or the wireless router will not be able to connect to the sat network.



Keep in mind the NAT firewall will not be able to protect the computer with the sat modem hooked to it, only the ones on the wireless side.
