Is it ok to run two different virus protection software packages on the same computer?

I've been running Trend PCcillin6 for the past 3 years, the program works great.

I just purchased McAffee professional 6. 0 for another home computer (Costco price $30. 00 -$20. 00 Mail in rebate=$10. 00)

it also includes a firewall.

Thanks,

Bob

Hey Bob... . I have no idea about the two different virus type programs.

Does this mean that you are running a router at your house? For both puters?

I run a router and hub with four puters on the same link. Router software is GREAT!! But need virus software bad... :{

What will work in my case?

I've been running that free AVG virus software fora while now. I just installed McAfee virus scan ans firewall when I got the cable modem.

I haven't experienced any problems yet. And I'm going on 4 years on the same computer with "0" viruses in that time. Oo.

you guys are lucky, I ve been sent several virus laden email over the past 2 months

I just would like to have the option of running either virus program on my main computer with no conflict between the two seperate programs at start up or ???

I know we have several very smart programmers in the ranks :D

The TDR is a great place for advice

There's no reason to run 2 virus scanner's, one is plenty. I recommend Mcafee, I run it at home and on our servers at work. The MOST and I mean MOST important thing is to keep up to date. Mcafee updates constantly (and so does norton, i assume), and this is the key to preventing "infection". Pick the cheapest of the two and keep it current... you should have no problem. (ps. . i'm sure there are other virus software programs out there, but I don't have any experience with them so "I won't talk about what I don't know about" :) )

Yes Norton updates automatically or manually. I had McAffee and liked it but it didn't care too much for Winders 98 or Me. Norton runs better on my machines. Since we went wireless with a Compaq router and Sony cable modem, I haven't had the first hack attempt and only one virus tried to get in. We have Norton Internet Security. My wife runs McAffee at work and has no problems with it there on Windows 98SE.

Sometimes running two virus scan programs can cause a problem if one sees the other's virus definitions as file names of viruses instead of simple definitions.

Thanks for starting this thread Bob. I bought it last week.

The Mc Affee stopped a "trojan" virus on my puter this morning. :D

If you didnt mention it, I probibally wouldnt have even seen it at Costco.

Eric

PS The AVG 6. 0 that I was running didnt suspect a thing.....

I recently switched from McAfee to Norton Sytem Works 2002. It has alot of bells and whistles, but it is a system hog. My computer is slightly dated, P2 450 with 128 m of ram. I need to double my ram, fortunately it real cheap now.

I use Norton. I think it's more user friendly. I've run the KLEZ remover recently but my system was clean. Dave Goerend was hit by a bad virus about 6 weeks ago. His machine basically died and had to be totally wiped and reloaded. Before it died it sent out emails with attachments to everyone in his address book and also used the email addresses to send more virus files to others. I got several angry emails from people I did not know asking why I sent them a virus. I explained that I didn't and related the problem Dave had. When I received the file from Dave I also downloaded it but Norton detected it and stopped it in it's tracks. I called Dave and that's when I got the story about his total wipeout. He had this happen once before and I believe he now keeps his address book on a piece of paper and enters them manually to send email.

So much for computers making life easier for us. :-laf :-laf

I'm still learning about these things, but couldnt he put the address book on a floppy, or CD? That would have to be easier than a piece of paper??
