Friday while pulling my skidloader home from Cheyenne, WY to Ft. Collins, CO, I was running constantly between 12-1300 on my EGT guage, (pre-turbo). I was running at #4 on my six gun. Outside temps were 85-90, with a 25-30mph head wind. I make this pull weekly, and don't see these temps unless I'm WOL. Loader/trailer = 10,000 lbs. Fuel filter has 3500 miles on it, & AFE has 10k since last cleaning. TIA, Scott

I think its the outside heat, I don't tow much but when it's real hot outside my egt's definately go up, and it takes much longer to cool down the turbo. They say 1300 pre turbo continuously is no problem, but in the same situation my banks would be on three or two or one, but I'm paranoid anyway ;)

I know for Ford's its stock 1200 as max and 1300 is still okay. The key is really to keep the temp from staying up there for any long period of time. I've seen 1600, but it was only during a high shift - not much to worry about.

I would think the heat is your primary reason.

One thing to remember is that we look at egt's to give us an IDEA of what combustion temperatures are, and combustion temps are what we need to worry about. The relationship between EGT's and combustion temps are NOT perfect. Many things are involved in this relationship and injection timing is one of the main ones. With the common rail systems and the multiple injection events you end up with retarded timing. Retarded timing lowers combustion temps and rises EGTs. What I am trying to say is what is hi EGTs for a 1st gen truck my not be high for a 3rd gen truck. What is high for a 3rd gen truck? I don't know. But I would say the 1250 on a 3rd gen is about the same as 1150 on a second gen.

Thanks for your replies. Is everyone thinking that my outside conditions played a large role in the EGT's. Or would a new turbo bring those #'s down... TIA Scott
