There's alot of opinions on this, here's mine. I run Stanadyne PF year round. I've never seen an increase in felt HP or MPG, but, if it's helping by lubricating the injection pump, I'm happy.

Same here, I run Stanadyne PF year round for pump lubrication. I just bought a new case but when it's gone I'm going to try the amalgamated and see how it does.
 
fuel additives

Cummins and Dodge both say not to use fuel additives in the 24 valve engines. Here is what the engineers at Cummins told us the other day at the tdr rally at Columbus, Ind. They said that using fuel additives may cause water to precipitate out of the fuel and cause rust and corrosion problems in the VP44. Well maybe so, but I think they are saying that to cover their xxxxxs . I think that no. 1 keep good quality clean fuel in your truck and service the fuel filter regularly, and keep a good fuel conditioner in your fuel, such as Stanadyne and you should give the Vp44 a long and healthy life. Just remember all fuel conditioners are NOT the same. Choose one that specifically rates fuel lubricity, because that is the main thing you are looking for. I regularly use conditioner in my 02 truck and all the ones before it. The low sulphur fuel is the cause of lower lubricity of our road Diesel fuel, so give it a little drink of conditioner. think it will help a lot in the long run.

While I was at Sheid's event last weekend, a couple guys convinced me that Power Service is not the way to go. They also mentioned that it may cause water to get trapped in the pump, instead of carrying it through the system as it should. Stanadyne was on sale at the event, so I bought a 1/2 gallon to try.
 
I run Amsoil diesel fuel additive concentrate and Amsoil cetane boost diesel fuel additive. The concentrate will out do any off the shelf additive for pump & injector lubricity and cleanliness. Even more impressive is the cetane boost. This stuff is AWESOME! It will raise the cetane of your fuel 3 to 7 points. It will literally change the sound of your CTD. Much smoother running engine and faster cold starts. It does this by improving the ignition qaulity of the fuel.



I live in South dakota and run #2 year around. -35, wouldn't think twice with these no alcohol aditive in my fuel.

Could you explain more. I know that the Cummins web site indicates that Cummins does not recommend additives but a conditioner that reduces water (why would it cause rust and corrosion problems in the VP44?) That does not make sense :confused: If this was a real problem I would think Cummins would say "don't use fuel conditioners". I have alway used Rotella DFA, it does everything, lubes, cleans, anti-gell, increases cetane. get it at Sam's Club 4 gallons for $33. 00 treats over 1500 gallons of diesel, which in my truck is good for over 24000 miles. Pretty good bang for the buck ;)
 
If you can get your hands on it, read the Amalgamated article on premium diesel and DFA in one of the past TDR issues.



there is a chart with actual Cetane boost numbers for a few additives... ... the AMSOIL DFA did not fare very well. Neither did Power Service.
 
I figure Rotella DFA must of kicked their butt or they would of shown them on the chart. I don't trust most results that are not done independant. Been in the business world to long I guess :rolleyes:

The Amsoil DFA by it self is only designed as superior pump, injector, & upper cylinder lubricant, as well as very good deposite inhibitor. Hence, the need to offer a separate cetane additive. I'm looking for (no luck yet) a idependant testing done by the university of wisconsin. When I find it I will post it. It show these two when used toghether were out performed by none at that time. I belive the test was done in 1997.

My neighbor is a diesel fuel injection mechanic and convinced me Power Service is not a very good choice for the VP44, that Stanadyne was the way to go. He said PS is great for the 12V engines for keeping injectors clean but doesn't add much lube benefit to the P-pump since it's oil lubed anyway.



I have been running the Amalgamated for the last 8 tanks or so and really like it. Engine runs smoother and better than with the other additives I've tried (Power Service, John Deere, Stanadyne, Marvel Mystery Oil, a couple of other off-brands). I haven't tried Amsoil's version though.

I have tried Power Service, Moreys, Napa, and Lucas. None made any SOPM, or change in milage. However I must admit that I use only two suppliers for diesel fuel... . and my truck likes the brand.



the only DFA I have used that has changed the "attitude" of the engine was the OTR Premium that you can get from Pacific Pride... . all I can say is that she liked it.



next I am going to try a little Maxima 927... . just to see if I can get that cool Racing Castor Smell... . as for carbon buildup from the Castor... . oh well!



then it is to Klotz R-50... smells good too!

Fuel Additive

I use John Deere fuel additive. They make a summer and winter formula. I figure if it is good enough that they recommend it for their engines it must be OK to use in mine. Can't say that I can tell any difference.
