Father in Law's stock 2001 3500 CTD w/ 120K mile (new to him in last 6 months).

It sputtered and died in driveway while idling to cool down and wouldn't start. It did, however, start again after a few minutes. The next morning it wouldn't start and hasn't started since.

Codes show: P1688 (Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure)

We changed the lift pump initially, but it didn't fix the problem.

Is the VP44 dead?

Is there anything else to check before pulling the VP44 and heading to the rebuild shop?

WAY too little information to even begin a long-distance analysis!

Is there a fuel pressure gauge installed to monitor if fuel is even reaching the VP-44?

Did you bleed the lines at the injectors, either before, or AFTER installing the new LP to be sure fuel was/was not actually getting to the engine?

Has the fuel filter been checked, or replaced to eliminate it as a possible source of fuel flow blockage?

We'd sure like to help - but it becomes all GUESSWORK without even the basic facts to go on... ;)
