All 2002 have a direct connect, while truck is driving in two wheel drive front axle and drive shaft are spinning, and free wheeling on front transfer case output shaft. When you engage four wheel drive that front output shaft is engaged.

That is not true. The early 02 had the CAD system in them... Jeff
 
Might be my mistake, but my May build 3500, does not have it. And the 2002 2500-3500 Factory service manual does not mention CAD, so maybe from January to April had it?

It's a very interesting story on those 1/2-a-model-year CAD-less Dana 60s's. Apparently, the CAD wasn't the only change, and the balljoints are different, too. I think parts for those axles are going to be a real bear to find if you own one and ever need any hard parts like knuckles.
 
Dodge liked to change the mechanical bits on the mid-year (think 12V to 24V in 1998). Production for 2002 probably started in Sept 2001.
