I have found a 1998 24v 3500 2x4, automatic quad cab for a good price. Repo w 155k (unless the odometer is messed up). I havent seen it, and want some info before I make the trip. I dont have much experiance with the 24v engines, and I am in a hurry. I did a search and know there were problems with the 53 block. Is there anything else I should be aware of? I have the vin - can you tell what engine is by this? the number is: 1B7MC3369WJ243268

Also, if I wanted down the road, it is practical to make this a single wheel vehicle instead of a dual?

The only way to spot a 53 block is to look at it. If the lift pump is weak or failed then the injector pump will soon follow. Later 2nd generation truck came with bigger better brakes and by 2002 were disks all around.

The rear dually axle is a different width than the single (an inch or two wider I think) and the steel box has some cutouts and holes for the plastic fenders. The front is easy -- just take off the spacers.
