My '01 center console lid has been "stuck" closed for over a week. No amount of force on the release button or the lid itself has helped. Short of prying it open and surely breaking something, anyone have any tips? Thanks guys, JimG.

Never experienced it sticking but would think putting downward pressure on the front middle of the lid would take some tension off the latch and allow the lid to open. Might have put something under the front so the pressure isn't transferred to the hinge.

Once you get it open turn the latch screw in the lower part counter clockwise with pliers so it doesn't latch so tight.

RDBSOB Have the same problem with my 2001. 5 and have had since new. I usually overcome the lock out by holding the latch button in with one hand and striking the front center edge of the lid with the other hand. By striking, I don't mean using excessive force, just enough to depress the lid slightly in order for the latch to release.

IFFLEM: thanks for the tip, will try this on my cover latch and see if it does the trick.

I have a 2001 also. My center console plastic hinges broke early on (common problem back in 2000) so I had it replaced under warranty. When I went to pick up the truck, the new one wouldn't open at all. The mechanic was baffled and couldn't open it either. The dealer ended up ordering an entire new assembly.

There is a 'slide' type mechanism inside the lid. The lid will not open when the console is in the upright position (acting like a center seat) but then will slide to the "unlatched" position when down (that's the theory, anyway). Try lifting the whole console upright and then bang it back down just in case your 'slide' is stuck. Good luck.

Surprised to see this come back up ! 2 weeks now still not open, between work and hunting I have not had any free day light hours! LEEH's tip used to be the standard technique to get it open ever since new, never dealt with it, now I may have to break it open  Obviously, there is nothing in there that I need to get at on a regular basis. Thanks for the tips, I'll post the outcome soon, JimG.

Try holding in button and use other hand on the corner of the other side and pull the lid towards the drivers seat. If that does not do it I usually smack the lid with open hand and mine will pop loose. The new TDR has this problem listed under the tech bulletins. JC

Lid is open! First, I scared it by climbing into the passenger seat with a long screwdriver. Then, just before forcing it, I pounded on it from that side and while holding the release in, lifted and dropped the entire console a few times. That did it, lid finally popped open, now to insure it won't stick again. Thanks guys, JimG :D
