I've got one of these hitches and I like it. Very easy to change between the sizes. And the way it's built, the only time that you put any stress on the retaining pin is when you have a direct upward pull on the hitch on the ball, and even then it holds up very well. Otherwise the pin itself absorbs all the force.
It's definitely easier than unbolting the hitch everytime.
I purchased one of the stainless steel Convert-A-Ball systems for my Polaris 6x6 (a 1 7/8" ball and a 2" ball). So far, for my light duty application it has worked very well.
I have a 2" and a 2 5/16" (1 1/4" shank) chrome Reese hitch balls, each on separate ball mounts (different offsets). I believe the load carrying capacity is quite a bit more with the standard hitch balls (i. e. , check the capacity of the Convert-A-Ball system and compare that to your requirements).
Years ago I worked for an equipment dealer and all their trucks had convert-a-balls because we had everything from lite single axel trailers to heavy triple axel trailers. We constantly switched trailers and used all three ball sizes. I even had an accident where I had to go for the ditch, folded the front of the truck around a power pole. My 24 ft. equipment trailer folded the rear truck bumper, but the convert-a-ball held! When I got my truck in '96', a 3 ball stainless steel convert-a-ball was my first bomb!
I've used one with a 2" ball for 4 years. Good product. Used for my 7000# GVW ranch trailer. It's rated for 8000#. I couldn't find a regular ball with that much capacity.
I got one from Putnam, it's called Quick Change and all 3 sizes are rated to 10,000 Lbs. It uses clam shell adapters to fit over the 1 7/8" primary ball. What I like about it is no amount of upward force will separate the adapters with out first breaking your trailers coupler and ther are 2 greaseable pivot points so-- less wear on the coupler.
I would advise to clean the inside of the balls as well as the shaft or shafts when changing balls. Seems to gather some crud from wear or debris. I use grease in the balls to prevent wear.
Stick with the stainless steel and you will have many years of trouble free service. Make sure you get the largest shank size that you can, and haul away!
