Convert Propane BBQ to Natural Gas

Anybody know of a good snowmobiling website/forum?

When we had our house built, i added a natural gas outlet in the back for a bbq pit. Well, my natural gas pit died last year, and my parents bought us a new pit, which is propane. I really want to convert this one to NG, but the mfg says they don't sell a conversion (the pit is made/labeled by Thermos and was bought at home depot). This pit wouldn't have been my 1st,2nd, or even 3rd choice, but I can't look the gift horse in the mouth. So, how do I convert this thing to natural gas?

The gas jet will have to be larger for natural gas. Some burners have adjustable jets. If it's not adjustable you will have to drill it larger or replace the orifice. Most gas suppliers have replacement orifices if it is the screw in type. bg

Been there, done that - many times.
BG is right. Furthermore, tables are avaliable that tell which orifice for certain BTU ratings for propane as well as natural gas. Once you determine the BTU rating (look for a placard on the unit, you can get the lettered drill bit (from a tool supply) for the precise size.
Two things, you'll probably get static from those you talk to because of liability concerns, but there is no real danger provided you get the right size bit and put everything back together correctly. Second, if you change your mind or need to re-convert to propane (smaller hole), you can always solder the jet orofice closed and re-drill with the correct bit for propane.

BTW - If you match the orofice correctly you probably will not need to adjust the air intakes. Check the color of your flame when your through. #ad

Good advice. I've converted two propane unit by simply drilling the orifices in the jets. You get better heat and cheaper heat, and no running out at inoportune times.

All the gas grills I've done have been tricky! They use a plugcock and the orifice is in the side of the plug. Plus, they have a low and high fire orifice so you have to use a chart and figure the input for both orifices and convert both. Craig
