How could running in 5th gear not hurt your mpg? My mpg will differ with just 5 mph.



If I'm pulling my trailer at 55 I'll get 14, at 60 I'll get 13, at 65-70 12 and so on. Yes a bunch of that is wind resistance but some is also rpm's.



We don't need to get in a pissin contest about this though, we are both happy with what we are doing :)
 
why not just run adapters so you can run real 19. 5s?



I was considering adaptor's but the best priced place seemed to have gone out of business and chromewheel was out of wheels until the end of the year. I figured running the adaptor's would also take away any weight advantage of running alluminum wheels.
 
you're probably right... one reason I'm attracted to the adapters is if you run into an emergency situation on the road, finding a standard bolt pattern wheel will be MUCH easier.

You would think, but mine are 8 lug and most 19. 5's are 10 lug. I can't find new center caps anywhere. It seems that all the kits out today use 10 lug though and that seems to be more common.
 
that's what I meant... using a standard 10 lug wheel vs. using an "aftermarket" 8 lug wheel.



although it is nice to be able to use the stock ram centercap!

I considered this also. The conclusion was that we are talking 19. 5" wheels and tires that are VERY sturdy compared to stock. If I come across a situation to where I damage the wheel... I probably have bigger problems to worry about and getting another wheel would be the least of them. Well that was the conclusion but I guess I just knock on wood and hope I never need to deal with that.
 
My buddy ran the semi wheels on his '04. 5 CTD 4X4 DRW. Looked really cool. But the ride was horrible. Towing it said it scared him. He went with the same adapters and 19. 5 Alcoas. He's got a leveling kit on it as well. Looks really good. Rides really good.

The ride was rough on mine too, but I cut the air pressure way down in the rear and it rides much smoother now. I don't have any problems towing with mine.

I guess I need to explain that a little bit more.



Using 60mph as an example. 5th gear is 2500rpm, 6th gear is 1850rpm. I get the same mileage in either gear while towing a load. Boost is lower and fuel pressure is higher when tooling along in 5th. Uphill or empty it's a different story.
 
The only thing I didnt like at first was that the tires were "squishy", the truck would move side to side some and it was a bad feeling. After I did what the tire manufacturer recomended to break the tires in, everything has been great. The break in involved taking them on a long highway trip (200-300 miles) with some slow acceleration and deceleration to break all the weak cords. Then let it sit 24 hours which strengthens the cords that don't break. Now it rides great, corners great and tows great. I love them.

I could be off but as I recall the stock setup is around 80 pounds, the alluminum ricksons are 110 and the steel is 130.

The rickson aluminum that I bought are 110#'s with the 245 Kumho M/T's installed and balanced. At least that's what they told me and I installed them by myself sitting on the ground and would say that's about right. I looked at Brentz also but they were much more spendy then I could personally justify. They are nice wheels. I don't know what the visions weigh.
 
Well everybody I decided to go with Bridgestone M729F 265/70/19. 5's. I liked the tread pattern and am getting the tires at wholesale so I figured I would try them out. I really wanted 245's but couldn't find the tread design I wanted, the only one was XDE MS and they would have cost me as much as the M729F so I will try these out and let you guys know. I will get them on this Sat. Thanks for all the input.
 
p-Bar the bridgestone website says the diameter is 34. 4 inches. I know that is tall but I am also looking for longevity and from what others have said the 265's should last a bit longer than 245's at least that is what chromewheel.com says. I think it will work out fine, however, i don't have a leveling kit on mine but after seeing some pictures on Rickson's website of 265's I think I will be fine.
