Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Converter leakdown woes?

My uncles '01 auto -45K miles-delays going into gear after starting-he says he has to wait a little before it will move after shifting into gear. Generally just the first start of the day or after it has sat a while. Fluid level, checked correctly, is OK. No other problems. I know there have been articles and posts on this problem, but now when I need them I cant find them!

Mine's always done that after sitting for a few days... so it seems perfectly normal. I just put it in gear, and with the engine at idle, just wait for the torque converter fill back up and the truck to start moving.



From the transmission diagnosis and testing chart in the Dodge Service Manual:

Torque Converter Drain Back (Oil drains from torque converter into transmission sump).



If vehicle moves normally after 5 seconds after shifting into gear, no repair is necessary. If longer, inspect pump bushing for wear. Replace pump house. ​

My DTT does it if it sits for a couple days. I just pop it into neutral for a second and then into gear. It seems to fill faster in neutral than in gear, plus then there no "dry time" on the clutches... if that matters any.

Yeah they do, but not as fast as they do in neutral. Corey
