I'm getting ready to do a transmission swap from my 6-speed to an auto. Sounds crazy I know, but it's one of those things that kind of came up.

We are going to swap even between the trucks. Everything will be there side by side. Has anyone ever done this on a CTD? What all needs to be swapped? We know the obvious: trans cooler, steering column, pedals, etc. Does the PCM need to be swapped also? Anything that we could miss that isn't obvious?

The rear plate on the HO and non-HO is still the same bolt pattern right? I'm just not sure. No one has been able to give me a solid answer.

Thanks everyone. Any and all help / tips in this is greatly appreciated.

i doubt you'll be able to swap pcms , the vin on the truck along with the mileage is in there .

the truck going to the auto could probably be reflashed to the non HO 6speed spec , but till that time check engine light will be on becuase of feedback from the trans that will not be getting fedback .

as far as going to an auto with your truck , comuter control feedback to an RE trans will be your problem , you'd need to get a non electronic trans to make your part of the swap work .

maybe i'm wrong on a couple points , but i would talk to one of the trans shops , DTT comes to mind :D , and ask bill what can and can't be done .

it would be easier to swap trucks and BOMB , the auto truck to HO levels ...

i just saw your sig , you're going to need a serious auto for that thing , and switching trucks won't bbe possible i guess

I'm getting ready to do this around the first weekend in december, and I'm having a heck of a time trying to get any details... anyone?

You'll have to swap center consoles, the "pocket" in the 6-speed dash where the auto cup holders are, probably the carpet and most likely the entire wiring harness (little things like the auto not having provision for a clutch start switch which also cancells cruise). The instument clusters are different. The JTEC controller in both trucks is in-cabable of learning about the trans swap so swap-em or buy two new ones. The truck that's getting the auto will have a hole in the firewall where the clutch cyl comes out and another in the floor where the shifter used to be. The truck that's getting the 6-speed might not have studs to mount the clutch cyl. Do both trucks have tilt, cruise, steering wheel mounted audio controls? If not the columns are not directly interchangeable. The "electronic" 47RE is not a true electronically controlled trans, the JTEC does not directly control shifts it just set governor pressure and allows/dis-allows overdrive and torque converter lock-up. I wish you luck, done properly this swap will take much more than a weekend.

Both trucks are SLT w/ tilt / cruise / etc. What we hope to do is make a trade out of everything that goes with each transmission. What do you mean by JTEC? Serparate trans computer? Could we swap out the dash panel? Just trying to get this all figured out. I knew about the hole in the floor, got a patch plate for that :D. Gonna take a whole tube of silicone to fill all those screw holes in the floor. Must be 40 holes!

Thanks guys! I'll keep all this in mind.

Gosh, really? Should be about 6 or 7 of us working on them. Sure hope i doesn't take much more than a weekend. Wouldn't want to miss college now would I? :p:p

Your truck has two computers, one bolted to the block that is the engine controller and one bolted to the firewall that does everything else, this is the JTEC (Jeep,Truck,Engine,Controller) it is used to control the trans on the autos and a few "body" functions on the 6-speed, also cruise.

i am going to say a prayer for you. And i really hope it goes well, but i think if you really knew how big the can of worms your fixen to open really was, you would swap trucks. JMO RRR

chris I think you need to sell that pos 6 speed and call up DTT cuz you knwo you will HAVE to call them anyway thereis no way a stock autotranny will hold up to that beast. I'm sure they can sell you everything you need. :D :p

Hey Kris,

You been talking to Mark Kendrick? I think he is putting in an auto too. IMHO, I would buy an auto truck and bomb it.

Charles

Gizmo 007 , Are Ya'll swaping out transfercases and driveshafts too. I am not positive but I believe that the auto has a different spline output shaft then the NVG 5600 ( 1-1/2" 29 spline ). Also I think that the transmission and t-case crossmember is different. Check the driveshaft lengths too.

Good luck it sounds like a lot of work !!!! I have done several G. M. auto to manual swaps and know what a project you have. Haveing a parts truck or swaping even is the best way IMO.

Once again good luck, especially on the electronics for the auto. Thomas

Thanks for the prayer rraulston! I think we're gonna need it.

Who said anything about a stock auto transmission :p. Don't worry, it the swap goes well, cryoed shafts, a hellacious TC and VB will be very soon to follow :D. That is if I can get it home in one piece.

So far, the head count is up to around 6 suckers... er, I mean helpers for the project. I can picture it now, 6 guys lookin like 3 year olds chasing helium balloons. Gonna be running over each other left and right.

Keep it coming guys, all this is really helping out! Thanks!

On older cars the crank for the auto didn't have the pilot bearing hole bored out. Not sure on the cummins if they are all the same...

Kris,

Do yourself a favor, and call BillK or James Nothum, he could also help you with some answers probly. He can deffently do DTT for you cause you need something besides stock. There is NO WAY a stock transmission will hold even the power of the injectors alone, and I KNOW what you'll do ti it the SECOND you take it for a drive. ;)

Kris: "Well it feels good with the injectors, lets put the box on 1x1. OK, now lets try 2x5! WOW, Here goes 5x5!!!":p

Do yourself a favor, and unhook that pump wire!!! :D

looks like andrew is tring to recruit people for the wireless racing team. :D :D :D :D

you should have seen him when we tried out the twins there was no 1x1 or 2x5 we started out on 5x5 and never got off. :p
