2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Converting to tow mirrors, what to do with holes in door

I just ordered a set of non power flip up tow mirrors for my 1997. Do any of you have a quick fix or any good ideas of what to cover the 4 holes in the door from the old tow mirrors? I don't have the money to have them welded right now just looking for something quick to keep water out and looks okay. Thanks

Can you get behind the holes by removing your door panel? If so, you can put a small piece of cardboard on the back, and use filler for the holes.

Are the mirrors you removed the "California" style?

I think they are the original chrome tow mirrors. Probably 6x8 or so in size. If I filled the holes could I just paint the spot or would that stand out. Never did any body work. Thanks

I'd just get some body plugs of appropriate size. paint them w/ some dupli color or something. They'll obviously be visible, but far more acceptable than half-fast body work IMO

You should be able to use bondo if it is stilll around. You will have to tape paper or bondo screen on the inside of the door. Bondo is sandable after it dries. You wouldn't need that much per hole.

You mite call around to some smaller body shops to see what they would do it for (bondo and paint). They like cash jobs.

Try Forrest's suggestion, it would be the cheapest and could be followed up if and when you decide to make the fix permanent. The rubber/flexible plastic type should be at least as waterproof as your window seals. Try auto supply stores like Auto Zone, Kragen or ?

I put my stainless bolts back in the door & ran it for 6 years untill I repainted it last year!!!!!

I would put the bolts back in but the bottom 2 have rusted and the nut on the back side must have broke loose. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Bondo absorbs water, will swell and crack, allowing moisture to eventually get in and promote rust. People might say that, if you paint it properly, bondo will be okay, but remember that you're not painting the inside of the door, and moisture can still affect the exposed bondo. I've seen it too many times. If you must use filler, use fiberglass.

Anyone have any pics of the CIPA power mirrors on there truck? I found a set for a good price. Just not sure if I want to get those or go with the factory non power flip ups?

I have 97 3500 and i didnt like the old tow mirrors. Got some nice mirrors from Genos. I moved the 3500 emblem forward, installed another side reflector over the rear lower hole. I found a couple of diferent key fobs to cover the top holes. Wallys has the tape. Even my wife liked my fix. I get a lot of nice coments, It really lookes good. Easy repair, less than $20 . Easy to trim the key fobs. BAD BOB.

johnis Key fobs are decerative things that hang on key holders. You can find them at auto parts stores. I found them with DODGE lable. They are just pot metal. I ground off the little loop and used two sided mounting tape. You can find tape in hardware section at wallmart, use the red kind not the white stuff. Problay would be a good idea to seal inside of holes with silicone to stop inside rust. No exterior rust on mine so far. I dont have any pictures yet. Looks sharp, and a lot less $ than filling holes and painting. I have had several people go wow,where did you get the emblems. BAD BOB
