Cool Down Problems

After I get my truck to operating temperature and I go to shut it down the lowest I get my egt's is 550-600 degrees. The only time I can get it to the recommended shut down temperature is when I leave the highway and coast to the exit ramp (250-300 degrees) but as soon as I accelerate the temperature shoots straight back to 800-1000 degrees. I unhooked my edge this morning and drove 60 mph on flat ground and my egt are 975 degrees, max egt from 60 to 90 mph was 1250. I am going to install a new turbo and a set of injectors when they arrive in the mail and I don't want to shut down a hot motor but I can let it idle in my driveway for 15 mins and the temp is still over 450 degrees. Anybody have any ideas what the problem might be ?

Make sure the A/C compressor is not running. This means you are not on any of the defrost modes either. According to posts I have seen this makes a big difference in cool down times.

I tried it with everything turned off and still get the same results. The only time the truck will cool down is when it has not gotten up to operating temperature.

What does your EGT gauge read when the truck is cold? Could it be a bad thermocouple?

I agree that it could be a bad instrument. My egt's really go down fast at idle as long as I remember to shut off the e-brake .

EGT's should go down really fast. Within 3 minutes I can see 300*. If you haven't already, Check the ground on your guage. Then change your airfilter and check the tube from the airbox to the turbo. IF that doesn't work try another guage. I would do all three of these things before you install the new turbo so you can get a good baseline of temps.

Pulled a 7000 lb load all over Charleston today. Went to fill up for fuel and in the time it took me to fill up two 5 gallon cans of diesel I looked at my egt gauge and it was sitting on 250 degrees. I pulled the load with my Egde on level 4 and I saw 1100 degrees one time for 5 seconds. The truck actually ran cooler with the load than it did empty. I think I have a bad egt gauge, I'll definitely get a replacement before I install my new turbo and injectors. I checked all hoses and the air filter, everything looked fine.
