Just changed the coolant after 2-years and 50K. I used Prestone 50/50, only the radiator drained, (cold). The old coolant I recovered sure was clean, and looked in good shape, (I disposed it. . ). But, I figured I should go ahead with the change (in So. CA Inland Empire about 100 degrees daily, last three weeks  ). The tempeture guage reads slightly higher than with the old coolant  . Do I need more concentration of coolant? Is the 50/50 pre-mix not a good product? Thanks in advance to everyone who replys. Still having First Generation fun Oo. -what a truck! :D

I just changed my coolant (along with hoses, belt, thermostat and heater core), and used pre-mixed green coolant. We use pre-mixed in all of our Cummins at work, so I don't see a problem. The only problem I have is the large swing on my temp gauge from the new thermostat, but I knew of that possibility before putting it in.

The higher the coolant to water ratio the poorer the warm weather cooling is... . or so I'm lead to believe...

I think the max recommended ratio for COLD weather is 60/40 coolant/water... . 50/50 is the best all around average that rarely requires "fine tuning" when you lean heavy one way or the other.....

All you gotta do is make sure you keep the guage in the recommended (min/max) zone and you're ok to go... .
