Coolant change in 93 Cummins

Howdy All,

Whats the best method to change the Coolant in the 1st gen. trucks these days ?. At one time the way to do it was to just drain the radiator and refill with a 50/50 mix of the same type, put some miles on it and do it again. Are we doing that now ? Will the new type Coolants mix with the old type coolants? Thanks, Ken

I parked on a steep incline, nose down, drained mine, filled w/ water and radiator flush, drove it for 30 minutes, drained, repeated w/ flush. I bought Fleetguard extended coolant concentrate, mixed it 50-50 w/ distilled water and filled 'er up.

Whats wrong with your current coolant ?



Is it weak ,or just dirty ? If its neither , you save your self a lot of problems



if youd like to do so , by just adding a rust and corrosion inhibitor



antifreeze doesnot wareout it just mainly gets to be an acid if the in hibitor goes away .





Here is the best inhibitor you can buy , go down to your local Napa store ,

or parts place that carrys indusral machine supplys .



When your there buy a gallon of wather soluable cutting and grinding oil



add 1 cup of oil either strait or mixed in water to your cooling system .



This is the exact same stuff you buy from prestone or there competitors

for $5. 00 for a small bottel for gallon of the other stuff its $22. 00



mix 1/4 cup for engines with small cooling system , and 2 to 3 cups for over the road engines like ntc Cummins stuff .



We do this to every engine on the place and never had a problem .



Dont beleive me you can talk to my retired 30 year radaitor /automotive

air conditioning Dad , as many radaitor shops use this same mix

Donovan, Thanks for the help. Upon further inspection, I found that I need to flush the system. I found a little "Bloom" around the tubes in the radiator. What do you recommend for a flush? Will a product like Prestone Super Flush do the job? Also, what coolant do you favor? Thanks again!

You can try the Prestone flush , most of the time a flush dont rely do any thing besides just remove dirt and crap , if the system is clogged

really to be honest the only fix is a good oldfashioned boiling out the radaitor core haveing it rodded out then both headers ran on it

then if your heater hasnt been operating real well replaceing the core that as well



When you say bloom , do you mean a seeping leak ? if its just a small pin hole try silver , or gold seal , dont use Bars leak , the Liquid stuff in the brown or gray bottel



Really all a flush is a money maker for radaitor shops to make $20. 00 on plus antifreeze
