2006 2500 CTD with 48Re and 44,500 miles. I have coolant or water dripping out of the inspection cover at the bottom of the bell housing. Is there a freeze plug at the back of the engine that could be leaking?

Maybe high up in the head. But theres a heater hose junction right side rear of engine that sits lower and is kinown for leaking. Look there first.

Thought I had the infamous rear freeze plug leak the other day. Got to looking around and sure enough it was the little heater hose by-pass back behind the exhaust pipe on the passenger side. took a small socket driver and tightened up. Leak went bye-bye.

Had the same issue a few weeks back, you'd think that DC could afford to pay someone enough to ensure the simple things are done correct on $40,000+ trucks. I never had any of these petty issues on my "92"

I had the same issue with that little hose on the heater plumbing just a couple weeks ago. Tightened it up - goo to go. I believe that the dealerships are replacing them under warranty with a silicone hose, have to check that out and see if I can get mine replaced. It did the same thing last fall. Such a trivial but vital issue, how stupid on DC's part to use and inferior cheap piece of hose. It's these little details that they seem to have lost sight of, makes you wonder why? I actually would have expected something like this to NOT have a problem, quality control must be a thing of the past.

You can check whether a nearby heater hose/pipe junction is not the cause of the leak, or if it is coming out of the bell housing. However, at your mileage and time of ownership, you should see your dealer for warranty service. There is no soft plug at the back of the camshaft hole, just an o-ring seal to the aluminum block plate from 2003-up. Up to about 1996, there was a flat type soft plug, and after that it was backed up with an o-ring between the plug and the camshaft. This plug or o-ring would leak oil, not coolant. There are no coolant soft plugs inside the block plate/bell housing area. There is one on the rear of the block above the block plate and under the cylinder head.

Same result as the other posters. The heater junction hose was leaking and a few turns of the wrench (by ME) solved the problem. The dealers fix... a zip tie on the radiator/overflow tank hose connection, even though coolant leaking down my transmission would never have followed that path. Two minutes of troubleshooting solved the problem.

Also, when I asked the service writer if they were lubing my drive shaft, as required in the service manual/engine compartment placards, he looked at me like I had canaries flying out of my ears and then said "yes". I guess I'll have to start doing that myself too.

Done with my rant... have a nice day.
