Try "Joy" and water. And a good rinse. That's what the marine guys use to de-oil the aftercoolers. Should work and won't harm anything inside.

I thought about that because we used it in Sitka on the tug I worked on but I was worried about foaming and then air locking.

A couple months ago at work (boat factory), I was prepping a pair of Volvo D6 diesels for installation. When the coolant was drained to install the water heater fittings, a brown sludge came out instead of green antifreeze. When asked what to about it, the engineer's exact words were to use Dawn, it cuts grease out of your way.

Cascade dishwashing detergent, the dry stuff in the heavy green box. Dump some in with preferably hot water, run the engine for a while, get it up to operating temp and circulating, then shut it off, and drain it. Repeat until it comes out with no oil residue. Then rinse it out with hot water, I run the engine during rinsing. Then fill with fresh coolant.
