Ok guys - I have 76,000 on my 01 and while in Idaho yeterday I noticed that my coolant was done to the lower level - or the add portion. I added about 1/2 gallon. ????? What should I be concerned about? I can't seem to see any dripping,, ozzing or any wetness. Could I have a head gasket problem? Or has she just got hot and sent it out the overflow?

Mine did the same thing a few months after I had it, just added some coolant, been fine ever since. I would'nt worry unless it continues to go low.

I wouldn't worry yet

Hammersly,

My 2001 ETH did the same thing with about 15,000 miles on it. No drips, leaks, etc. . Added about 1/2 gallon to the resevoir, never had a problem again.

I posted this same question earlier this year when I had this problem. several guys replied they had same problem, suggested it may have just been air in my cab heater section of the lines, as I hadn't really used the heater much when this happened to me. I added coolant, made sure to run my heater for a few days, have never had low coolant levels again.

Thanks

Thanks guys - I. m going to keep my eye on this - after adding this coolant, it shouldn't go anyplace, especially going into the winter, that is by overheating and spittingher out the overflow, if that ever happens.

If the overflow bottle is low, it didn't go out the overflow. The overflow is on the recovery bottle! This was probably just an air pocket in the system.

WestTN - help me buddy - Maybe I'm using the wrong term - when I mean the overflow - I mean the plastic coolant bottle where you add the coolant to. Where is the recovery bottle - aren't they one and the same? Is there another bottle?

No, there is just one bottle. The overflow outlet is right below the cap of the bottle.

If the loss is an ongoing thing, I would check all hose connections. If the level has just dropped a little a couple of times after servicing the cooling system it is probably just air pockets working their way out of the system. Taking the engine all the way up to redline while accelerating a time or two will chase all the air out. It's also a lot of fun!
