Coolant smell

My father in laws 02 3500 CTD stinks like coolant when he turns it off. Did a die test, no coolant leak. Probably needs to be pressure tested to see if he blew head gasket. Is there anything else that would cause coolant smell?

It could be the water pump look under the truck at the waterpump there is a hole that will leak if the pump goes bad. If it wet or if you see any thing like a stain were it leaks but from the heat it dries up. I worked at a shop and we always did pressure test didn't believe in the dye.

Two other fairly common sources are the little connector hose on the pass side above and behind the turbo agaisnt the block. It is only a couple inches long, wrapped in shiny heat tape, check the clamps.

The other is the back freeze plug on the drivers side, this requires looking from underneath with a light right up under the intake.
