Just got home from vaca to Shenandoah Natl Park and while pulling some 6% grades in WV, my coolant temp got up to 215. I was pulling a 5'er (dry weight 6800#) and this was the 1st time I have seen the temp past 190. Is this normal or time for a new thermostat? Guess I am not overly concerned because outside ambient temp was 90. By the way, I am a "stock boy. " ;)

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

I saw the same thing towing up the Big Horn Mountains. It concerned me a little, but never happened again since. I confirmed that the fan was working and it didn't overheat, so I attributed it to the grade and the outside temps (in the 90s also).

coolant temp ?

When it gets up around 90 degrees and pulling a steep grade with a load you can expect

this as long as your electric fan is working you will be fine.

:D Oo. Signed! One old truck driver.

Coolant temp

I don't think you can make the temp go to 215F on a CTD with a correctly working thermostat towing a 8800# load at 90F outside temp. Mine overheated on Eagle pass in New Mexico, changed the thermostat (read defective) and went over Monarch Pass without getting to 190F. bg
