I flushed my coolant system today and after draining and refilling with water twice before refilling with coolant my temperature guage has quit working! Is the sending unit on the driver side behind and below the rear engine lift bracket? If so, how in the world do I get to it? I found a post where someone loosened and retightened the sending unit and it started working again. Oh, to be so lucky!

From above. I didn't remove anything on mine. Used a ratchet w/ universal, extention and socket to get at it. Mess of wires in the way, but you can sneak it through them. I have long arms, so that helps too.

I just did mine, it takes a deep socket and universal and extension and you can slip it in pretty easy. I put the socket on first and then add the extension. Its almost a straight shot parallel to the fire wall with nothing in the way you just cant see it.

Any idea why my temp guage is all over from cold to overheat with lights coming on? Changed sensor 6 months ago now it started again. Got tired of dinging so i unplugged sensor, what do you know it still does it. What makes guage peg itself with no sensor hooked up? Even right after start up sometimes...

You could have a short between the wires of coolant sending unit. Look for bare wires in the wiring harness you can also check the connector.

I had a 82 Buick Regal which was computer controlled after intalling a water pump I looked at the wires to the coolant temp sensor saw the stripes on the wires and thought nothing of it. Took it out for a dirve the car kept on dying on me. Towed it back home looked at the wires again and realized those stripes were bare wire so I taped them up with electrical tape. Car ran fine after that.

Talked to my mechanic he said when the wires were touching, it was telling the computer the engine was over heating so the computer told the carb to dump more fuel into the cylinders causing an overlflooding condition causing the engine to die.
