Can anyone tell me if there is a coolant tester available for our trucks. I'm running the Zerex 05 coolant and would like to know if it is still strong enough for this winter. Thanks.

You can buy a cheap tester at any auto parts store or you can step up a bit more and buy a refractometer that will be more accurate. You can also test the coolant with a voltmeter to see if electroylis (sp) is becoming a problem

I test mine annually with a anti-freeze hydrometer... and add back a quart of additive that is to replace the chemicals that leave anti-freeze with age... I'm now down to one truck. . and only change anti-freeze once every 5 years... I use a flushing tee, and flush out... than blow out with compressed air... the tee is installed in the heater hose line... and I remove the radiator cap instead of opening the petcock... than add back fresh anti-freeze and distilled water...

I own the refractometer that Bob talks about... the one I own has two scales on it... one for anti-freeze and the other for batteries...

I didn't think there was additive for HOAT coolant??

It's a 5 year/100K coolant from the factory and 5 year/150K for G05.

For years we've gone to CAT and purchased an additive... . pint plastic container... each pint treats so many gallons of liquid... its a chemical adds to the lubricity of the coolant the way soap is added to sprays. . and fortifies the coolant to replace some of the chemicals that will become ineffective. . I now see that Prestone and Zerox both have an over the counter product as well... its my belief that a little prevention is more cost effective than changing more often...

I started doing this with large Cummins and CAT engines I had in the larger trucks... in fact I used to also have coolant filters with a chemical in it on my Ford Pickups before I went to the Dodges but found it wasn't necessary... .

For me it was keeping the system PH balanced, and working... .

All the Cat additives I have seen are SCA2 and SCA4 additives, which are not what HOAT needs.

The same thing with coolant filters, I haven't been able to find an additive filter for HOAT.

PenRay (whom I trust completely) offers this filter that is compatable with HOAT. We sell this need release filter to many fleets. NF2088.

edit... For our cooling systems we would need the NF2091 which is for 8 gallons or less.

Cost on the Penray NF2091 is $49. 00 not much cheaper than doing the coolant change???? but lots easier and a lot less hassle than changing the coolant

As always thanks Mike for giving us another way of looking at things.

Yes, I should have mentioned that they will blow hell out of a fifty dollar bill.

My two biggest fleets, who whine about prices of just about everything don't even bat an eye when purchasing the Need Release filters.

Penray sends out qualified folks who know the product to visit the fleets, educate the fleet's technicians and establish a chain of communication so that the Penray team is available to the customers at any time. No hiding behind e-mails or ducking voice mails.

Big has asked about where to find these and I have to say that the net is probably the best bet. The problem with a dealer trying to get these for you is that case quantity must be purchased. Most dealers will be reluctant to buy a quantity of (12) filters in order to only sell (1).

I buy case quantitys of the NF2088 because I already have customers that buy them.

Need to find someone that is stocking the NF2091 already for an existing account.

I am going to be installing a coolant filter coming uop this winter with the first, overdue flush on my 2005. I was going to use the Donaldson ECF4085 with NO SCA additves, but would definitely consider one of these since they claim to be compatible with the HOAT G05.

Maybe if enough of us show an interest, Genos Garage would want to carry them!!

AT $70. 00 a throw!!!!!!!!! + shipping

I didn't pay anywhere near $70 for a ECF4085. Retail is only ~$50, and the can be had a bit cheaper.

Paid 23. 85 plus shipping for the ECF4085 here--

I have been getting my filters there since I discovered them last year... great prices and helpful staff (Henry)... Vet owned too!!

SOMETIMES there search function can be wonky, but when you call be sure to mention the website for the best prices.
