Friend wants to change his coolent on a 2001 24valve..... Mechanic told him he had to add certain additives or the coolent would eat through the block... ... I thought that was a problem with the old Ford 7. 3 PSD only... ... . Do you need additives with the coolent on the CTD?????

Fleetguard DCA-4 cooling system conditioner. Helps prevent electrolisis and maitains the propper PH of coolant. They also sell a test kit to check the level of protection so you know when it is time to add more. I use it in all diesels. Jake

You can use it, but not needed on the 12 and 24v 5. 9L B series engines. They are parent bore, meaning they don't have liners like most other diesels. They don't have the cavitation problems like PSD or others with liners.

Paul,

As bmoeller stated, some diesels will cause coolant cavitation and subsequent erosion of the cylinder wall (from the coolant side). It's a vibration issue.

This is not a problem for the Cummins 5. 9 engines installed in Dodge trucks. Your friend does not need a coolant additive.

I too am using the Fleetguard DCA-4 coolant conditioner though as stated it is not needed for the cavitation problem. I use it for the other benes like pump lubrication. :)

Coolant additives= Redline Water Wetter. Great stuff for preventing corrosion and making the cooling system perform at max efficiency. Make sure you get the non-diesel version.

Two questions?

Believe "Water Wetter"and "Chill Out" (similar product) were both labeled "Not recommended for use with Magnesium heads" I know Chill is so Labeled. Is Water Wetter?

Question #2, isn't there Magnesium in the CTD heads?

These products Do work well, reducing surface tension of water in coolant giving better fluid contact to hot metal surfaces. I would use one of these but heard somewhere about Magnesium in heads so have not. Anyone know for sure?

3/24/04 - Found out Heads at Cast Iron with very small amt of Mag - not enough to concern using these additives!

Hohn,

Why would you use the non-diesel Water Wetter. I'm getting ready to place an order with Redline and thought that there Diesel Water Wetter was what I needed? What gives? Are the additives harmful? Thanks. Towguy
