Any ideas on improving engine cooling, last fall pulling 12,000# 5th up long hill in 2nd gear(auto trans) my temp gauge was at the top at the top of the hill. Now I will add some power, along with DTT TC & VB, will I need more cooling? Also how about additional trans. cooler?

When you have it in 2nd gear, the TC doesn't lock up (unless you have aux. electronics to do this). This means lots of heat! Going to third gear may help, if the engine can pull without lugging. What gears do you have?

Tim, Thanks for answering, I have 3. 55 gears, couldn't get up to 3rd. gear. I have found the problem, took out my rad and had it rodded, was somewhat plugged. Put in new belt and thermostat. The thermostat has a wider range on the temp gauge than the original which I thought was a lot.

I`m new to the register and have been reviewing the threads for a problem simular to the one you had. I have a 96 auto with the same gearing as you. Leaving Santa fe NM heading north I had a simular temp problem. I`m pilling a 36 ft fth wheel at aprox 13k lbs. I bought the truck used with 45k and it seemed to be in excellent shape. On the costal flats I have had no problems. How did you determine that your radiator needed cleaning. What caused the heat, transission or what??

I knew something was wrong as I had pulled the same hill and load previously without the high temp. Decided to pull out the rad. and take to my local rad. shop where they examined and took apart and cleaned out and rodded the tubes. I suspect someone put in tap water which is full of minerals here, and the deposits were left in the tubes. I will pull the Rockies next month and I am sure will be cool. Hope to have my DTT TC and VB installed by then. Installed TST#5 and did a trip thru the mountains 2 weeks ago and was amazed at the acceleration in OD above 65 mph.
