Hey Guys,



I'm getting bored trying to figure out a way to get into 19. 5" wheels & tires to go bigger in diameter without going wider.



Looking at my bank account -- I just have to wonder -- $3,200 to Rickson's is a bunch of mulah for 4 aluminum wheels and 4 tires just because I want to go narrow and tall. So I'm considering the possibility that I might save about $2,400 and go fat and tall. It's still tall right? And $2,400 spends pretty well elsewhere.



I realize that conventional wisdom for 315/70R17's is to go with the BFG's & the Toyo's, but I get bored doing what everyone else is doing. Never been much of a follower. So here the best deal I could find on the Cooper Discoverer ATR's:

Cooper Discover ATR are what I have and like them very much. I have 265/75R16 and that is big enough. They ride great on the road, have good traction, and pump away water quickly.



My neighbor has the GeoLander tires on his Toyota Tacoma and they are LOUD as anything and ride very hard.

I considered the 19. 5" route too, but like you JGann, just didn't think the price was worth it. I went with BFG 315's AT. I wanted taller tires to cut my crusin' RPM's down a bit, and needed the AT's for mud traction. So far I'm really happy. My 315's will rub if I lock the wheel to the left, but no biggie.



I was concerned about the load range D rating with the BFG (no such thing as a BFG 315/70/17 with load range E), as my "empty" weight is usually between 9000-9500 lbs and I tow heavy fairly frequently. So far though, I have been very impressed how little these tires squat with a heavy load. I know the stock 265 load range E's and my current BFG 315/70/17's load range D's are both rated for 3200 lbs, but the BFG's do it at 50 psi where as the stock tires had to be at 80 psi... so I'm enjoying the slightly softer ride from these new tires. If you don't need mud traction, those Cooper's that your looking at look pretty good. Looks like a decent price as well.

Thanks man! I was going for something a little more like a highway tread. I don't tow or haul anything (it's just a toy) these days so the "D" load range suits me fine. Having more rubber to soften the load will also help out.



I promise to provide feedback to everyone (good or bad) so that others can decide whether this is an option. Cooper tires aren't super common and seem to be cheap. If they're great then it's good to know there's another option. If they suck I'll have gotten what I'd paid for and that will be important to know too. Time will tell tho. Thanks for sharing your experience / insight!

I run the LT33x12. 50R17 Mastercraft Courser C/T's..... they're available in LT35x12. 50R17 as well. Cooper is the "parent" company of Mastercraft... . great tires and priced right, too. Check out their website... . www.mastercrafttires.com .

I just went to the Mastercraft (being a boater, I keep thinking of ski boats) site. The layout and navigation is identical to the Cooper Tire website. Very interesting. I had no idea.



I guess all these brands are related subs of Cooper... .



They have a Courser A/T with the exact same specs for the LT315/70R17 as the tires I just purchased but a totally different tread pattern:

Put the white letters on the outside, thats what I have ... I'm not ashamed of the Coopers. I like old fashion ... I wear my overalls all the time like some hick from the 30's. :-laf

IMO the ATR should be great, it has a very similar tread style to the Toyo Open Countrys that I ran on my 03. Very quiet, great wet and snow traction, smooth ride. If they had a 295/70R17 I would have bought the ATR.



If you have to put the letters out. . keep em clean otherwise they end up looking like custom wheels covered in brake dust, just looks silly. I say black walls.

Funny you mention that because its really a good idea. . run it that way for a week to see what you really like the best and them stop back in at the tire shop and have then flip the 2 you want to change, good thinking!

I considered it but with 3. 73's and the auto I didn't want to reduce my towing performance. I lowered the back vs lifting the front and the 33x12. 50R17's I did go with fit real nice.

I'm wondering how much rubbing (if any) I'll get with the stock 4x4 front end and the 315's. I'd prefer not to have to lift it as I like the stock look of the lower front end.

I wouldn't doubt it. The D range tires I am running are 2600.

I haven't weighed my truck but another fella posted his 4x4 CQ loaded weighed in at 4200 on the front axle. I would have liked a higher load rating but couldn't find what I wanted.

That is a good deal, just be sure to check the back space on the wheel cuz all they care about is lug pattern so they may stick way out there.
