Cooper tires for a stock 3500 4x4-recommendations please

The thing that's impressed me for over forty years about Michellins is that they are so perfectly round. I hve bought tires that could NOT be balanced and repalced them with Michellins that didn't NEED balancing. That said, one of the new Michellins on my wife's Tundra is vibrating!

That's rare, sombody agrees with me. One of the things that impresses me is how little weight it takes to balance Miclelins and how perfectly round they are. The Cooper that seperated on me had 16 ounces of wheel weights. If we can go to the Moon why can't everybody make round tires that need very little balancing?.

My tire guy says I can expect 80k out of Michellins. He sells Cooper and Mastercraft.

I would take this with a grain of salt. My 01 2500 CTD came with Michellins, I got 30k out of them. They were decent on road tires, but sucked in snow and mud.

Cooper 285 S/T's for me. I have run nothing but Coopers except for the last set I wanted to give BFG's a shot. The BFG's wore decent, but after half tread life you couldnt get out of wet grass with them. Almost 50 bucks / tire less for the Coopers and much better traction. I can get 40,000 out of a set of Coopers rotating every 6000. Thats 2 years for me.

I tried Firestones based on advice froma friend who owns a tire shop, and had to replace three of them within a year. I'm buying Coopers or Michellins in about a month.

Hopefully I have better luck, as I had 6 installed last weekend. Were yours Transforce tires? Did they wear out, or fall apart? What kind of mileage did they have on them when you replaced them.

Cooper ATR tires

I am going to try the cooper atr in a lt 265/70/17 for my summer tires. The stock michelins got less than 40000. I run buckshot mudders with studs for my winter tires. The BFG Mud terrains on my former truck F-250 were the best mud/snow tire I've used. The mileage wasn't that great less than 28000

but I tow a 7500 lb boat and 7000 lb travel trailer along with occasional 2600 lbs of water in the bed of my vehicles. Will update the cooper atr in the future as I will be getting them inslalled 7/30/06. The BFG doesn't come in load range E for my stock size (265/70/17) or I would again make it my winter tire of choice. I also used a Super Swamper on my F-250 and would rate it a 1 on a scale of 1-10 they were 255/85/16 and sucked in snow, ice, dirt,and wern't as good as the BFG Mud s in off road and lasted about 12000 miles impossible to balance . I also have used the firestone destination mud terrains again not available in my size but a good tire on my ford.

Since 1965 when I got my first set of Michelins, If they make it in your size, buy it!

I run the Cooper 285/70/17 SST on my 05 and love them. IMHO The only tire more durable has Toyo stamped on the side. Michelins are ok on the freeway, IF I get them free and you could not PAY me to run BFG or BRIGs ! Again JMHO.

I'm undecided between the Michelins LTX M/S and the Cooper Discoverer S/T... I have to do something this week!!

I am 78 so I have used a lot of tires, my opinion There is only one tire, Michelin, all the rest are imitations. Michelins are round (smoother ride) and require very little weight to balance. I had a Cooper separate at 30K. Then I noticed it had taken 16 OZ of wheel weights to balance it. When we can go to the Moon there is no excuse for an "out-of-round" tire or the need for excess wheel weights. The old saying, you get what you pay for, applies to tires too.

I have the Michelin LTX M/S in load range E for my 97 3500 and I really do like them. I plow snow for myself(9' blade) and am impressed. Quiet, ride well, low rolling resistance, great in rain, great traction in snow.



Had the same tires once before on a Grand Cherokee, and had no trouble getting around in the snow in it also.



I'll buy them again.

I was looking at various tire options for snow and read the comments on the tirerack.com about the Bridgestone Dueler Revo in my size of 265x70x17 load E. They are really raved about by a bunch of people. They get excellent marks all around. I am going to go to them when I need some.

I vote Michelin..... recently I bought a pair of factory Michelin take off's from a local Dodge dealer for $300. I've been very happy running them.

I found the J D Powers report on the internet a couple of years ago. They surveyed 500 tire stores in the midwest. Their finding was that there were complaints on every brand of tire except Michelin on which there was no complaint. When you buy a Michelin you pay more but you get more. I like to watch the tires being balanced when I buy them (If the tire shop will allow it) and while they are still spinning you can see they are perfectly round (smooth ride) Michelins do not require nearly as much weight to balance them. The materials used and the process used in building Michelins is secret. When they do allow a tour of the plant the machinery is covered. B F Goodrich is owned by Michelin but there is no similarity in the tires. If you need a special purpose tire with a tread design not available on Michelin then of course you do not have a choice. As I have said before I have bought a lot of tires in my lifetime (now age 78) which does not make me an expert but has given me time to gain some experience. My Dad used to say advice is free therefore worth nothing. The best we can do is what seems right at the time. We can sometimes profit from others experience and I suppose that is what this site is all about, being "neighborly". Computers make someone living in Florida (like me) close neighbors with Washington State. I am a true believer in "what goes around comes around"

Bit the bullit this morning...

Bought the Coopers Discovery S/T's took off the chrome on the wheels for the winter. Nice rugged looking tires. Just got a dump of snow yesterday too so tomorrow I'll take 'em out and see for a first run. Highway noise is my concern now.

Road tested the tires today 400 +miles. or 600 klm's/ Handled great in the snow /ice coverd backroads and on the bare highway. The wandering I was getting in the front end is completely gone, must of bee the old General tires doing it. No more road noise then my Generals except in dry pavement around town and then it's just barley noticable.
