I am in need for a set of new tires in the 285/75/16 to 305/70/16 range. Are there any good or bad expirences out there with Cooper Brand Tires?.
I know they are the Oldest USA Tire Company that makes its own tires.
Thanks.
Doug.

Had cooper tires on an old jeep and loved them to death. However, with all of my dodges trying every thing from goodyear, MIch. , Cooper, Big-O, Durango's, I always come back to BFGoodrich AT's... They are expensive, however, I get excellent traction in mud and snow. . I get about 35-40,000 miles on a set, more if I didn't run them so hard. . If your budget is tight you may want to consider Firestone. . ( that's what you will get if you use them a "FIRE and SOME" ) HeHeHe.

I have never used Cooper's truck tires...

However, I have used some of thier car tires. They made the ONLY tire I ever found that would drive well under my 72 chrysler wagon. They had very beefy bead reinforcement and shoulders, and the sidewalls stood up, even when cornering. No more driving on the whitewalls! They didn't last as long as they were supposed to (about 25K miles), and were kind of expensive, but the car drove outstanding. They also came in a 265 width and low profile.

I also used some of thier special compound winter snow tires - the non-studdable tires that have a cellular compound- Weathermaster XGR. They were absolutely outstanding in the snow and ice, outperforming many studded tires.

The local tire store sells lots of tires made by Cooper, but with a different brand on them, and they are quite pleased with the price/quality ratio. While they might not last as long as some competitors, my friend insists they are about the toughest things you can get.

I had a set of Cooper mud terrains last year and LOVED them. I tried goodyear AT/S and they wore out in 12 months. The Coopers were 33x12. 50x16. 5 which is a flotation type tire, and they hardly showed any wear after a years worth of driving. They didn't hydroplane or vibrate and they rode smooth for a mud type tire.

I've had several sets of Cooper tires but none on the Dodge. They did real good on the Ford(yes, thats what I used to drive) and will wear well if you keep the front end set up correctly. Winston is one of the other tire shops that have the tires made by Cooper.

They get good traction because of the soft compound but wear out pretty fast as a result. Just my experience with their 235/85/16 and 255/85/16 tires.

Coopers? -- I love em'. I have had a few sets of Coopers over the past ten years one various vehicles and they have all met and exceeded my expectations. I ran a set of 235/85s on my 1996 Ram for ~45K and they still had a good 10K left in them when the truck was sold. Also, I am currently running the Cooper C140, 8R19. 5s on my Rickson wheels and they are terrific. They wear like iron and last. No hydoplaning either.

FWIW, I know a guy that has been a Goodyear Tire store owner for 30+ years and he also sells other brands. He will sell NOTHING except Cooper for snow tires to his customers. He says there is nothing better on the market.

My local Goodyear dealer got tired of me beating them up asking "do you guys sell tires for my 2wd that will last?" they sent me to the local truck store, that sells Coopers. I bought 4 Cooper SRMII's 245/75/16 E and they come with a 60,000 mile tread wear warrantee!!!!!! Only load range E's I could find with any tread wear warrantee. I got about 10K on them, (never rotated them yet) and they still look brand new. They are quieter then the RT's, ride better, and wear 100X better! The RT's used to wear the center out on the back (empty at 35 psi) but the coopers are still looking brand new.

DieselRam,
My 2nd set of tires on my Dodge was a set of Cooper Discover's 245/75R16 load range E and they wore out after only 28K (less than an 1/8 inch tread left and the side walls were very weak . . you could feel the truck kinda roll on turns). I rotated them every 5K and kept the tire pressure between 50 and 60 psi. I now have a set of Michelin LTX ... best tires I have ever owned on any car/truck I have ever owned.
After my experience, I would never buy another set of Coopers ... Michelin's ONLY, on my truck or my wife's Subaru Outback.

Firestone makes a very good car tire, but if you don't put enough air in your tires and run them at 70 mph you will have a problem. The public can be some real dumb ****s,and when they screw-up it's not my problem Firestone has lots of money lets blame THEM because they HAVE LOTS OF MONEY LETS BLAME THEM . They did not make sure I PUT ENOUGH AIR IN MY TIRES. People keep it up and you'll get what you want NO FREEDOM,because you are a bunch of DUMB ****S WHO SAY NO ONE TOLD ME HOW MUCH AIR TO PUTT IN MY TIRES, and did not read the paper work that came with the tires or the side walls. I rest my case. Take blame for your own actions.

Their snows are excellent. I have seen side by side on the same hill with the same trucks my Coopers blow away what is reputed to be the best snows, Nokian Hakkapelita's.

Someone recommended Michelin LTX - that's what came stock on my truck. I replaced them with a larger tire, so I don't know if they are any good, but they sure are pricey at $110 apiece locally.

I have personally never used Cooper tires, but strongly recommend BFG AT/TA's if you do any amount of driving in snow or mud, and still want excellent highway (wet or dry) handling. They are worth the price and I personally woouldn't buy another tire... .

I guess that I've just got a few bad sets in a row... . The trucks here at work had them and we had a hard time with the tread separating, not like a Firestone, but definitely shakes up your coffee. Some are good and some are bad.
I run Yokohama SuperDigger V's, Great in snow/mud and wear pretty good.

I have used Cooper 255-85 Discoverer LT tires on my Ram since shortly after it was new. I really like them for traction, dirt, rocks, rain, snow, daily commuting. They fit well on the stock 6. 5" wheels of my 97. Wear is OK. I don't want a tire that lasts forever but is so hard a rubber compound that it doesn't give good traction, and the Coopers are a good compromise. They are relatively narrow and tall for the size and that is good for me in snow and rutted trails.

I also strongly recommend the BFG 285/75/16 All Terrains. They work great in the snow. Much, much, better than the stock tires. They also have a stiff sidewall which keeps the truck from wallowing in the turns. The 285's will mount up just fine on the stock wheels and also will fit in the spare location. Mine have about 53k miles on them but I will replace them before the snow files. They should make it to 60k or so...

10-4 on the Coopers I am on my way out to the driveway right now to rotate for the second time about 10 k on them now and they look to be wearing very nicely. Be careful they seem to be narrower than other brands.

I currently Have a set of Cooper Discoverer's on the Old 97 4X4 with about 20 K on them, I guess they will make it to about 30K.
I have not had any problems with them.
Would I buy them again?, Probably not.
I had a set of Kellys on the W250 Diesel I used to own and got 40K out of them and I did a lot more heavy towing on them too.
The Rickson 19. 5's look like the hot setup, I would like to put them on the new 01. 5 IF dodge ever decides to build mine and IF they won't void the warranty. #ad
