Coopers Ready to Replace

After 46,000 my tires (see sig) are showing signs of steel belts through the rubber. Not where one might think on the tread area but, on the low part of the cleats at the edges of the tire - all four of them There are little slits like the rubber is separating revealing the steel belts beneath. I've never seen this before?



I guess 46k is npt bad for these tires? Anyone have similar issues with Coopers or other brands?

46,000 miles is about 30,000 more than I have ever got from Coopers. Never on this truck though. On my other trucks they would wear funny and quickly. You're doing good for any tire at 46,000 miles.

Luckily you both can put them on your trucks. I emailed Michelin and asked if they had plans to produce them in 17" and they said NO.



Their loss I guess, but I always had good luck with the LTX M/S too. I wish they would pull their head out of the sand and realize that all of the big three will be 17" or larger off the lot!!!

Oh boy, we can have tire wars now, I guess? Like anything else, it is in the eye of the beholder. As far as what a real truck tire looks like - it's based on your application/flavor. Some like straberry some lemon.



By the way I just found out Cooper discontinued the Discoverer A/T due to problems with wearout. The place I bought mine from told me they had a set on their 2500 and they couldn't get 25k out of them - they ran bald.



So I'm looking at General Grabber AT2's @ $151. 00 each. I'm told these are new tires for General and on back order with no anticipated ship date yet. Figures . . .

So your telling me they make a 10 ply 17" in something bigger than 235/85?



I know they make various sizes but none in an E load 265/70 or bigger.



I have asked both dealers and the flunkey who replied and the answer from all is they don't make them and have no plan to.

I am really surprised. All of the Coopers I have run, were great. I have been getting 5k+ miles per 1/32 of tread depth. Have been running the S/T tires. Just put new ones on 2-3 weeks ago, in 235-85-16, instead of the 215's.

I'm sorry but if this is how you base all of your buying decisions... . you'd be doing a lot of walking. Very few things are solely built here in the states. As far as electronics go... . the "Japs" make some of the best stuff around. A lot of what is used in our cars/trucks today is made there. Quite frankly I'm not worried about my fanny. The war with them is over.

PS, I just put on Kuhmo 235/85R16 load range E Venture M/T's

They ride better than my Yokohama Geolander A/T's of the same size, but they seem to have a better sidewall.

Have 265 BFG KOs with >60K miles and still a bunch of tread left. One's been out of round for 15K - makes for a vibration at 43 and 63 mph. Other than that they've been good tires, rain, snow, mud, whatever. Will probably buy Michelin LTX/MS next time.

I had a set of BFG KO's in 285 size that all came apart at 22,000 miles. You could see steel belts between the tread blocks. That did me on bfg's.

RT - you may wish to try beads, http://www.innovativebalancing.com/service.htm I used them a bit too late (43,000 miles into the advertised 50k life) with my Coopers. I would probably not have tried them if the price for Roadforce balancing had not doubled. When I first had Roadforce done it was $25/tire . . . it worked and provide very smooth ride like I never had with the Coopers. Thank goodness they raised the price to $75 - 125 per axel for oversize tires. Now when my Nitto Terra Graplers are installed this week I'll have the beads in from the beginning of their life. And, never have to put up with balance problems a few thousand miles after having my tires balanced and pay for rebalancing again.

I have the Walmart 285/75R-16s with about 27,000 miles and going strong. They cost me about $90 each on sale. Price has probably gone us some but for the price, they are great tires and easy on the wallet to boot.

Cooper Discoverer ATR's LT315/70R17D's

I just put a set of Cooper Discoverer ATR's LT315/70R17D's on my factory alloy's. I really like them so far but I just put them on.



You can see pics of them on my truck at the link on my sig. They look great.



They have a 50,000 mile treadwear warranty which is the most of any tire in this size range. They balanced out perfectly first try and are smooth up to 80 mph. I know they're an economy tire but I paid $160 per tire and figured I'd risk it. So far so good.....
