Corn Question

First let me say I am from Texas and grew corn, along with other produce. I am now in Oregon and I see corn fields all around here. The corn mostly grows around dairys and they seem to have cattle sewage ponds. They use "poop shooter" to spray this sewage water on the corn.

Please tell me this corn is not for human consumption. This corn is almost ready to be harvest and they still use the Poop Shooters dumping cow dung on the corn. :--) Maybe I should start growing corn again.

What you are seeing is likely silage corn. They grind the entire plant up and pile it or put it in a pit with other ingredients and let it ferment for cattle feed.

I can tell you that there is a company that processes raw human sewage with lime and maybe something else, I don't remember. It's been going on quite some time and yes it is very controversial when they inject it into the ground and grow corn on it. Injecting animal waste is very commonly done. I believe corn grown on the waste is not supposed to be consumed but who knows what happens along the way.



It boils down to a matter of economics.



At least they got corn out there. The field corn around me tassled but has no ears unless irrigated.

Ever heard of a 'Honey Wagon'? In places in Europe they spread human waste on the growing crops and yes they eat the crops. bg

When I was a teenager long ago, we had a neighbor who used to go to the sewege treatment plant and scoop up a truckload of dried people poop to put on his garden. I never warmed up to the idea. I don't really relish the thought of poop corn to go with my movie either.

I do know this; tomato seeds are not digested by humans. A electrician friend of mine worked at the turd farm (waste water reclamation plant) and there is a large concrete vault where only the tomato seeds go. About every 6 months they have to emyty the thing out because it get full.

If you stink about it, that is a whole lot of seeds. He did not tell me what they did or where the seeds go from there.

I live about a mile from the largest dairy farm in my county. John is right. they harvest the entire plant before it matures and grind it into silage. then it goes in a ground silo and gets covered with tarps until they feed it.



and yes they use the pooper shooter to fertilize :{ boy does that money smell bad.

This would be silage corn. I believe it's illegal to use manure liquids on sweet corn (what we eat). What you're seeing come out of the big gun (i. e. sprinkler) is the liquids that come out of the manure seperator. Dairies are required to have containment for the liquids (lagoon), and can only dispose of it when conditions allow.



You can usually tell if you're looking at silage corn vs. sweet corn by the appearance. Early on it's more difficult, but later the silage corn gets much taller than sweet corn does. Also, if the corn is planted near a diary you can bet it's for silage.

JLinder, Yeh that is what I thought. As for the size of the corn you should go down around College Station, Tx. Them A&M Aggies are always messing with corn. Or they did 10 years ago when I was there. You could drive along and see four rows of short corn stalks the next could be close to 20 feet up. Every 4th row or so was different size. There must have been 50 different types in one field alone.



Last week there was a pooper shooter shooting across the road. One guy actully drove right thru it. Me and some others went looking for a shutoff switch. Someone found a worker and he was:--) and fixed the problem fast.

I'm gonna beat Doc to that question. What you are seeing is actually the outer "hull" of the corn. Our digestive system cannot adequately break down the whole kernel of corn. Same probably true for tomatoe seeds. Don't ask me where I learned this, cause I honestly can't remember. Now quit checkin out your brown betties cause someone's gonna think yer weird. LOL
