My owner's manual states that my xfer case (doesn't specify model... just xfer case) should be filled with:

Dexron III ATF or Chrysler ATF +3 TYPE 7176 ATF

My Chrysler service manual states:

Mopar Dexron II or ATF Plus

Research on the web reveals (DodgeRam.org):

Mopar DEXRON II or ATF Plus TYPE 7126 ATF

The following notes were added:

- Some brands of Dexron II fluids cause seal failure

- Some people use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF

- Some people report that Amsoil also works with no trouble

When I called my dealer and inquired:

The service desk-jocky asked a mechanic who stated to use Dexron III since it was newer formula and would provide enhanced qualities (almost verbatim  )

Could someone clear the fog? Dexron II or III??? Also, I'm a Redline fan and was planning on using one of their products..... any others running Redline? What type? Any issues?

Thanks!

Xfer Case lube

My NV241HD got changed out to Royal Purple Max ATF which is recommended for all automatic transmissions requiring Ford Mercon® or GM Dexron® III transmission fluids.

I had no problems in the 8,000 miles before I sold the truck.

I've used the following in my NV241HD:

Red Line 7176 ATF+3

Red Line D4 ATF

Red Line High-Temp ATF *

Amsoil Universal ATF

* Just changed out my old Red Line High-Temp ATF, adding the same synthetic when I refilled it.

NOTE: ALL ATFs I've used (listed above) are 100% synthetic. ALL have worked very well. providing the ultimate in protection to my NV241HD.

Also, I added a custom modified Fast Cooler to my NV241HD last year (not that I "needed" it mind you... :D )

I just changed at 28,000 miles to Amsoil ATF. If I am remembering correctly, it meets the spec for Dexron® III. Had the dealer install it.

I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF fluild from Autobone for 4. 99 a quart. I change the fluild once a year regardless of mileage.
