I am getting ready to order parts for KDP tab fix. I have seen two seal kit numbers, 3904353 and 3804899. Which is the correct cummins number?

Thanks,

Greg

old number is Cummins 3909410. New number is 3804899. Either will get you the part at Cummins. Remember you need the gasket as well... 3918673

Just in case you need the dowel pin (mine was missing). Its part #04429257 from dodge.

The parts guy new exactly what I was talking about when I asked for it (gee, I wonder why!!!!!)

I'm off to buy another seal kit b/c I tore mine trying to get it on.

Anybody have a easier way than the plastic install tool?

It should be fun to get out, I locktite-ed the seal in.

David

The 4899 is the one I used in mine. It has the driver and the extra dust seal that the old original did not.

Don~

The seal is supposed to be installed from the inside according to the shop manual unless of course you dont have the cover off.

David,

The install tool/depth gauge in my kit was metal. There is a plastic thingy that is a dust shield. It goes around the end of the crank behind the pulley. I didn't know what that was for so it's still on a shelf in my garage. I'll put it on one of these days.

Thanks for the info guys!

I had the seal pressed in the cover fine, but the trouble came when I went to put it on the crank. The inside flange doubled over and cracked. I even used the little plastic install tool.

Should I put grease on it? I was going to try WD40.

How about the front cover gasket, should I put it on dry?

If you put anything at all on the seal it WILL leak. It's some sort of teflon thing that friction causes to seal against the dry shaft. The kit should have a plastic bell shaped guide for installing the seal. I put the guide in the seal (messed one up before I figured it out) so that the seal is fulling expanded before I put the gear case cover on. When the cover is put on the crank will push the guide out of the seal.

This is how I used the plastic guide:

I put in in the seal and then put the guide on the crank and pushed the seal all the way over the guide until it was seated on the crank. The I pulled the plastic off the end of the crank.

The teflon seal transfers some teflon to the crank as it breaks in and makes a dry seal.

Well I got it back together yesterday, and all I can say is that I'm a moron! The second seal I got went on easy as pie. I had the plastic install tool backwards when trying to install the first seal.

The plastic tool has a large end that fits over the crank first as your pushing the cover on. The small end is on the inside dia. of the seal.

Just FYI for idiots such as I.

Ok guys one more time to get the correct gaskets please... .

Cover gasket #

Front Seal #

Dowel Pin #

Sorry about the repeat. . I just want to have all the correct number so that Cummins can get the right ones. I don't want to tear into the truck just to find out that I have the wrong gasket kit and also they have to order one and it be down for a couple few days. .

Thanks

Rick

P. S. Anyone in the Central Valley want to come watch to see what need to be done??????

Part numbers

Gear-case cover gasket, Cummins part #3918673

Front crankshaft seal, Cummins part #3804899

Dowel pin #???????

Thanks for the numbers..... the parts are on order!!!!

Rick

P. S. I talked to Cummins West,Fresno Ca. and the shop foreman said what they have done in the past was to take a punch an peen the edges of the dowel or the hole to keep it from coming out. I still like the idea of the tab:-laf :-laf :-laf

I love these smiley faces. .

Front crank seal, 05012290AA

Gear-case gasket, 4638719

TIA

you need a wear sleeve kit, it comes with the wear sleeve that uese a special puller to press it onto the crankshaft, and yes it comes a larger seal that must be used. i dont have the damn number off hand, but i will try and get it tomorow.

wes

Thanks WES, that would be super! Anyway I had the sleeve & seal installed @ the dealer (Thats probably why it leaks) so I guess all I need is the seal, unless the sleeve wore Out! Anyway I'll probably be stuck on this boat till June 1st. RikaRio
