TDR,

In the middle of swapping out my old rear diff cover for a new Mag-hytek cover, and have a few questions:

1) I swapped out my rear gears 20k ago from 4. 10 to 3. 54 ;). After draining the fluid, it was black instead of the usual brown. No water, fair amount of fine metal shavings on the diff cover magnet. Is this normal color for 20k used gear oil?

2) Got the limited slip rear-end and wonder how much friction modifier is used? The dealer said one 4oz. tube, while the book says 6oz. But since I have a larger rear end cover now, will I need more than the dealer voiced 4. oz.

tks Steve

Black is normal for 20K and so are the metal shavings. Isn't 4oz one container? If so it may take a little more. You'll know if you feel it chatter on the start off going around a corner. One thing to consider is if you use synthetic (Valvoline, Amsoil) you probably won't need the additive for LSD. I put in 75-90 Valvoline Syntec last change but will go to the 140 next trip.

I changed mine at 30K and it was black also. Put in Synthetic 75W-140, and it didn't need any friction modifier. :)

I repplaced my Mag-hytec and when I did, I put in 8 quarts of fluid and 3 bottles of modifier. I think the bottles were 4 oz but not sure. the level is right where is is supposed to be.
