Question about 4th generation trucks

Grizzly:

That was in 2009 and diesel was very high in the "boonies" so I gave you worst case.

We actually averaged between 8 and 11 miles p/gal, depending on the terrain, but we were always trying to run with empty holding tanks and a minimum of fresh water, about 20 gallons. We used bottled water for cooking. Our speeds over most of the 2 lane roads up there were in the 35 t0 40 range due to the frost heaves.

We always ran with the maximum tire pressure allowed on our Goodyear trailer tires which would be 110PSI. Truck tires were always at 65 PSI.

I would go with TLane's advice and check current prices on gasbuddy.com

Dually Depot Tanks

Grizzly,

Dually Depot has these tanks made for them & they install them in Elkhart, IN. The one I have was their largest tank and their cheapest due to the shear volume of tanks sold to the trailer haulers. Those guys wanted as much holding capacity as possible.

I do not know if they have one with a tool box attached. What about installing a separate tool box? Not enough room, I imagine. However, the extra fuel capacity where the tool box would be on top of the tank might come in handy. Just a thought.

In the event you're interested, Dually Depot's number is 574-266-9151 & their email address is duallydepot.com. Hope this helps.

I just looked at one today at a truck accessory shop. It's a 50 gal gravity flow with a small tool box. Sells for $1200 installed. I've heard some negative things about a gravity flow aux tank. I do want a small tool box.

I have about 6" between the truck rail and the 5er.
Grizzly;
I bought: RDS Auxiliary Fuel Tank/Toolbox Combo — 51 Gallon, from Northern Tool. This model fits in my 6. 5' bed, '04 3500, whereas the wheel wells prevent the 90Gal. tank from fitting rail-to-rail. I believe it's a good value & easy to install. I used SS Security bolts from local hardware store, just to be safe. I value the 5-6" of tool box on top, so the 51 gal. capacity instead of 70+ gal. is most acceptable.

I also mounted a Facet-Purolator, Gold-Flo, Cylindrical Solid State Electronic Fuel Pump, model PRO 59S to the frame rail at driver's door. It's plumbed from the aux. tank's "dip tube", with a automotive in-line filter up stream!!! to the truck's fill hose. [Manuf. adapter was not avail at the time, so I easily constructed a "tee" fitting from Home Depot copper fittings.

Purchase additional [internal] pump filters, as they are difficult/impossible to obtain in stores. It's powered by a toggle switch on my lower dash. Yes, I've left it on twice & overflowed my tank a bit. At 32Gal/Hour you can expect 30minutes to fill a half tank. [aren't you impressed with this higher math!] I mention this so you don't think it's a real construction type fuel transfer rated pump. I decided to save another $600 by skipping the auto fill option of some competitors. This is not gravity fed & works just fine.

Happy trails.

I intend [read not done yet] powering this switch from an "ignition hot" circuit.

I didn't invest in this $700 option untill I experienced several situations our first 3 years RV'g, where I needed fuel, the normal stop was closed & I barely got to the next truck stop.

Those are good tanks. I've seen many of them and known many fellow RV transporters who used them. I would have bought one but I already had my trusty old Transfer Flow tank and had used it for a couple of years when I started transporting.

Thanks Shad. That's probably the most useful information on diesel pricing through Canada yet. Very good web site.

Experience over the last 5 years annual trip.

Fuel was around $1. 19 south of Ft St John and $1. 39 from Ft Nelson north. Fuel in Alaska was around $4. 79. We fueled at Dawson Creek, Ft St John, Ft Nelson, Contact Creek or the Cassiar intersection, Teslin, Haines Junction, Tok and Palmer.

We expect it will be a bit more this year.
