My throw-out bearing is making noise. Clutch has also grabbed when engaging for the last 15,000 miles. Have been quoted a price of about $1650 for a new fly wheel, NAPA clutch kit and installation. Sound reasonable?? Should I try to get an OEM clutch kit?? Thanks.

i replaced my clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing at 193K. the kit (all of the above)was about $250. i bought mine thru a driveline shop, but it is stock replacement. if i did it again i would go heavier, but it hasn't slipped yet. you can turn the flywheel,it was $25 or so. the shops name was universal joint, now it's fleetpride. i did the work myself, but you gotta have a transmission jack, especially with a transfer case. you could have a tdr get together and get some help, or lots of bosses! good luck! pete

If you tow to the heavy side, make sure that it is a 13" clutch and that equates to the stock Sachs clutch or a towing clutch from someone reputable such as South Bend Clutch. The clutches offered by virtually all the parts chains are the 12" variety and wont hold up to heavy towing (not enough dampening at the cluth hub) The best price I found for a stock Sachs kit was $439 with free shipping.

And, if you do go aftermarket, be sure it is from someone who deals predominantly in diesel performance and low end otrque applications. I had a LuK that I was UNimpressed with.

$1650 sounds about in line for Napa- overpriced to say the least. BD, South Bend, and others that either advertise here, or have links from the TDR would be my recommendation. If you were closer, I could recommend a shop, but alas, you are back toward my adopted home.

ALso, in leiu of a transmission jack, you can use a floor jack and ratchet strap, if you have a solid surface, i. e. a concrete floor. Reinstall may be more difficult, but I sometimes have had to make do with what I had at the time.

How do I get ahold of Sachs, South Bend stock clutch is $325, upgraded $375, 12" to 400 H. P. is $648, and the 13" is $999. Is the 13" worth the extra $350 to $600?

I would not recommend using a floor jack IF you have any type of decent rental store around. You can rent them for a day for $30-40, and trust me it's worth it. I've pulled a few of the nv4500s (taking T-case off first), and I couldn't imagine doing it with a floor jack, and there is no way in hell you could do it without a jack. But, like Daniel said, sometimes you have to make due with what you got (no flame intended DP).

The Sachs is stock for the early 89-93 trucks, if SBC has a stock for 325 then it should be a Sachs. As far as what you need for a clutch, I would suggest talking with Peter and being honest with yourself as to the realistic intended purpose of your truck. Peter won't steer you wrong.

I stuck with the Sachs because my trucks purpose is to pull trailers. I don't plan on BOMBing beyond straight pipe exhaust and BHAF. I don't want my mileage to drop off or reliability to suffer.

Harbor Freight and Northern Hydraulics sell transmission jack heads you can put on a floor jack. They look pretty good for the money. Its not worth the wrestling match taking transmission and transfer case together. I just did my '89 w/ an auto to change the rear main seal. I split them to put it back together,I hadn't done one in 7-8 years and forgot how much fun it was in one piece. pete
