ADVICE ON EGTs

New Diesel Pickups an uneconomical choice?

We recently sold our boat and are considering hauling it to the new owner. The boat and trailer weigh approximately 12,000 lbs and we average 10-11 mpg on the road hauling the boat. Our truck is a 2001 HO with a six speed standard. I want to set a fair price to cover my cost including wear and tear on our truck and would like some feedback as to a price per mile. The mileage for the trip is 350-400 one way. Thanks Tom

Did you get all you wanted for the boat? If you did you might cut the new owner some slack but I would consider at least $1. 50 per loaded mile if you had to come down on the price, if you came way down $2.

I agree... nearly $200 in fuel for 300 miles, plus load, unload, driving at near 65mph, + wear and tear.

$185 fuel (about $0. 60 per mile (12mpg there) includes drive home (at 18mpg)

$90 600 miles wear/ tear ??? (just assume $0. 15 per mile) U-haul charges

about $0. 39 per mile

$180 12 hours of driving/set-up--- $15 an hour (nice guy discount)

= $455 for 300 miles not including lunch, dinner, = $1. 50 per mile

If you aren't hauling it commercially, you can't charge a fee for your time. The number that most businesses use for driving personal vehicles is 49. 5 cents a mile which includes fuel and maintenance. This number has changed in a year or two and it probably will change soon because of fuel prices. I would think that doubling this number would be fair.

Well at 10mpg at 4 bucks a gallon (wouldnt that be nice)your looking at 40 cents a mile just in fuel no maintenance just something to think about. Randy
