I have bought a newer, heavier 5th wheel and am interesting in have my 97 2500 2wd 3:55 rear end for a 4:10 to increase my pulling power and reduce work load on transmission. What does this typically cost and where is is done, i. e. , in Dodge dealership, transmission shop, etc. ?

I have had a couple trucks none, you are lucky you have a 2wd. I found a good rear end & transmission shop, just so happen to have one a couple miles from me. If your looking for one, first inform yourself with some basic knowledge and prices. Start with the type of rear end you have. Is yours a dana 70 or 80? Then get any 4x4 magazine and look at the different ring & pinion set offered, and take note of the prices. Select the gear ratio you want, you are not limited to the dodge gear sets, so other ratio's may be available. I have dealt with booth "DRIVETRAIN WAREHOUSE 1-800-269-5889 or www.drivetrainwarehouse.com, and RANDY'S RING & PINION 1-888-905-5037 www.ringpinion.com . Both of these shops are great and will help you out. They have alot of info on there site. Don't forget to get new bearings, seals, ect. Just ask what will you need they will know. If you go somewhere and the people seem hesitant, or not very familiar with rear end work, go somewhere else. Your installation should not be to bad, they can leave the axle in the truck. As far as cost go, usually a ring & pinion set goes for 200-250 (your is unadvertised) bearings, seals ect 100, labor for the install 200-300. This will get you close. My chevy 4x4 was about 2400 but I installed new differentials, My ford pre-ruuner was1100

Rear swap

Too bad if you had a dually I'd be willing to trade for your 3. 55. I am sure somebody out there would be willing to get the better top speed of the 3. 55 rear.
