Dic, i think i herd on the dicovery channel it was. it hit along time ago, and slung a big chunk of crap out into space, and we have a moon that is too fer away for its size. if it was formed the normal way, it would be alot closer

The latest theory is that the moon probably formed from debris cast into space when a asteroid struck the proto-Earth.



Lot's of evidence backs this up. The density of the moon is very similar to that of the outer layers of the Earth. The average specific gravity of the moon is 3. 3 compared to 5. 5 for the Earth as a whole. The absence of a dipolar magnetic field on the moon indicates it lacks an iron core.



We also know from radimetric dating that samples from the moon were formed 3000 to 4500 million years ago. And their composition is similar to those of the Earth's crust and mantle--rich in minerals derived from a silicate melt.



Most importantly, the general compostion of both the Earth and the Moon are very similar, suggesting the source material formed at nearly the same distance from the Sun.

EMD - You might call it a vacation. I've been put on restriction by my doctor and my employer hasn't OKed me to return to work, mainly because they need to create a new job for me



Seeing as it's summer, all the bosses are gone fishing and they can't get together long enough to come to an agreement as to what they think is best for me ( again).
