Couldn't stand it any longer! I made it a whole 6 months! Just got back from town and the Cummins definately sounds good minus the resonator and muffler. All it took was about 1 hour and $50 at the local muffler shop to go to a straight 3" system. Haven't driven it much yet, but I darn sure like the sound. Sounds like one of the "big boys" now. The "little woman" probably won't like it, but she didn't like it before. She says it is too big, too loud, and too stinky! Man, I love this truck! I get a shot of testosterone every time I start it up. :)

$50 for a straight pipe??? OUCH! Did the muffler shop do the install for you? It cost me $20 to get the pipe from a local muffler shop, and about 3 hours of cussing, swearing, banging, cutting, and more swearing to get my Cat and Muffler off. Then, about 10 minutes to get the straight pipe in and clamped up. But, $50 for a 5'4" straight piece of 3" steel pipe with the ends flared seems rather high to me.

Scollins-
The $50 was for the complete job including the pipe and I didn't have to touch it. I've got a bad back, so $50 for the whole job sounded pretty good to me considering I wouldn't have to skin any knuckles or weld any hangars on etc. Also he welded the back joint to prevent any leakage or it working loose.

I'm with you SLVRBLT i paid 50 to get mine done and i love it... . but then again i am not mechanically inclined at all so i would have done a lot more damage than good... .

how do you like the sound?
you ought to try it with the silencer ring removed, it just completes that 18 wheeler sound..... #ad

FF1381-
Tell me more about the silencer ring. I am new to this, so I am silencer ring challenged! I really like the sound. My buddy heard mine and immediately took his '99 down for the "$50. special" today. Does the silencer ring removal make it louder? Does it get rid of some of the "whistle". I would appreciate any enlightment on the subject.
Dave

The silencer ring is in the turbo housing in between the air intake hose and the turbo blades them selves... you can take the air hose off and use two screw drivers to remove the little ring being careful not to scratch the blades, if you do take it out however i have been told that you shouldn't try to put it back in because of the risk of putting it back in wrong...

removing the ring makes the whine of the turbo louder... and don't worry about being ring iliterate, i am the least mechanically inclined person here and i was able to do it #ad

let me know if you have any more questions

Ahhhhhh! Then, $50 is a BARGAIN!!!! If the muffler shop I got my pipe from would have removed the cat and muffler for $50, I would have jumped on it. BUT, they said they would not risk losing their Emmision Repair Certification by removing the cat. Can't blame them though.

Since it took me just over 3 hours, I figure my labor (based on what my job pays me) was almost $80! So, the total job "cost" me $100. You are WAY ahead of me, friend.

Got mine done for $35, including the new section of pipe.

Anyone know what the diameter of OTR truck stacks are? I figure that the larger the diameter of pipe we run, the deeper and more like the Big Rigs, the sound will be.

What's the maximum diameter that will fit under our rigs? If it's 6" I'll be getting 6" very soon. Probably will cost me and arm and an old-lady.

Thanks for the info FF1381. I may just leave the silencer ring in for now. Give the little woman time to "adjust" to the sound. I don't know why she was surprised about the straight exhaust? Every thing I've ever owned had the exhaust modified sooner or later. I've got 2" straight drag pipes on the Harley and she loves the way it sounds? Feminine logic I guess????????

Wowzy - $35. is a REAL deal!!! Don't know what the OTR exhaust diameters are, but I'm sure they'd sound good on the Cummins. Take a tape measure to the truck stop??? Don't know what the max. diameter that will fit under the truck is, but one thing I have learned over the years is that almost anything is possible with a cutting torch and a welder!! Yah!!!

The "big-rig" guys like BOMBing as much as anyone, when they can get away with it... their stax are anything ranging from a 4"single (real good on a B5. 9, but probably marginal on a C8. 3 and like an e-brake #ad
on an N14 (14 liters bay-bee!) #ad

all the way to 7 or 8" duals #ad

I saw a Stupid Dooty over memorial day weekend that had a 6" set up on it. My fist thought was "Nice Tip" then after further inspection that MF went all the way up and over the rearend. He had some flaperglass boards so i couldn't see much further than that. Of course being on a PSD it probably sounded like a wounded elephant

One of the big excavating companies that I see here in north Texas has a couple Pete's and one Mack all with 8" dual stacks. Sounds real good. I have a set of 4" stacks that I had on my truck at one time as sidepipes. It was too loud in the cab. If I ever get around to putting a HX40 in I'll probably run the full 4" with the stacks out the bed.
